It's Day Two of the Slow News Week. WPVI offers up this heart-wrenching tale of a little boy, his mother, an envelope of cash and a criminal mastermind.
For those of you that don't have time to visit Channel 6's fine, fine Web site, here's the skinny. Brennan Starr, a cub scout in Aston, Pa.'s Troop 225 (go 225, go!) was selling popcorn with his mom outside an Upper Chichester Wawa Sunday afternoon. (And no, that is not a picture of Brennan on the left. Could be a young Karl Rove, though.)
They were approached, according to Channel 6, by a man in a brown coat and blue sweatshirt -- a sinister color scheme if I've ever seen one. Seven-year-old Brennan says the suspect asked his mom a simple question: "Do you take change for hundreds?"
Mom naturally produced an envelope that was bursting at the seams with cash. And then the man did the unthinkable. He grabbed the envelope and ran. It would be difficult to make this story hit higher levels on the Jesus, Didn't-You-See-That-Coming-o-Meter. Right now it's hitting 9.5 .... I imagine the only thing that could have put it over the top is if the crook had instead asked Brennan's mom, "Hey, do you take change for million dollar bills?" or "I'd like to send you some rocks I brought back from my trip to the moon. Can I have your address, social security number and date of birth?"
In the meantime, Wawa has taken up a collection to get Brennan his money back. Local law enforcement officials have released this sketch of the sinister madman who somehow tricked Brennan and his mom:
