Did someone drop a mysterious isotope in Philly Mag’s water cooler?
Those folks have been on fire when it comes to writing something honest about crime in this city.

First it was Greg Gilderman’s November cover piece on how a proper change in PPD patrolling policy could actually drop the murder rate.
And now this in their December issue:
Even with a gun court, Philadelphia judges always seem to find a way to go easy on the young hoodlums who hold entire neighborhoods hostage. Only the judges know for sure why this is so, but there are at least two appalling possibilities. First, a number of them are bleeding-heart imbeciles who don’t believe stiff sentences have any deterrent effect in the streets. Second, since judges are elected, they need to raise campaign funds from the defense attorneys employed by the drug dealers who appear before them — in other words, Philadelphia judicial careers are fueled with and corrupted by blood money. So which is it? Are the judges stupid, or merely crooked? We might just fix this broken system of ours if only someone inside the Criminal Justice Center would start snitchin’.
Jeez, Noel Weyrich.
You sure left the sugar coatin' at home.
Now that the upper class (c'mon PC has never spotted a Philly Mag in the 'hood) are starting to really talk about Philly's omnipresent gun problem, PC wonders if things will really start to change.
Let's see...
Since the November murder cover story, the police department has restructured their weekly statistical meeting, given captains more power, and rehired retired detectives to search out illegal guns on the streets.
All hail the magical isotope. It sure is workin'.
We think it is called RICHPEOPLEWITHPOWER 210.

That should be Phillionium 210(but, since you discovered it, maybe you should name it after yourself "Simonium 210"), but it should only be used to assassinate corner shoot-outs and drug deals. Not ex-KGB agents.

Philly does not have a gun problem.
Philly has an illegal narcotic sales problem and mayor Street and Sylvester Johnson have done nothing in all their years to effectively solve the problem.
They both should be without jobs starting tomorrow, but the problem is that the media in Philly have been giving them a free pass for years and years and have even been duped to believe the problem lies with rural state legislators in counties they have never visited.
It is shockingly appalling at the lack of understanding and coverage of the problem.
A one gun a month law in PA will not save one person from being murdered on the streets of Philadelphia. Not one (or two, or three, or four, etc.).
What is needed ismore police to be on the street, more DAs to prosecute criminals, and yes more space to store those who would murder someone simply because they thought they saw someone selling something on their "turf."
Complex problems have simple solutions, but they are usually not "politcally expedient" and thus they are never implemented by politicians like our mayor or mayor wannabees...

Hey Kate -- sometimes the links to those stories expire. (There's a technical way to explain that, but it's way over my head.) I'll look the story up on our archives and post it.
