The bored-half of Philly Confidential went to see the dystopic thriller Children of Men the other night, and had to coach herself out of a near tear meltdown.
See, the movie is about the End of Time—where women are infertile, England (yea right) is the last civilized country on the planet, and terrorists rule everywhere else.
The film's point--it seems--was to teach the clueless public the possible consequences of Bush's War as present day propaganda and hysteria continue to grow. Yet, all PC could do was think about how the flick reminded her of Philly's bleak future.
Just tonight, the Wizard of Washington admitted that he was behind all the "mistakes" in Iraq. But it seemed the Bush speech, in Philadelphia's case, was too little too late.
The Philadelphia House Authority recently announced that they are laying off 350 people because of federal budget cuts, 22 percent of their staff.
The police department, the DA's office, and DHS have all complained to PC in the past about their own money battles with the feds. To our surprise, Mayor Street said he planned to speak to congressional leaders about Philly's need for federal dollars, according to the People Paper's Mark McDonald.
Wow. Street does have a heart.
But where has all the money gone in this first-world country of ours?
How come it seems that Washington is being forced to turn its back on urban America?
Since many city agencies are all pointing the finger at mass federal funding cuts, PC needs only one shot at the mystery :
The Iraq War!
According to the BBC, it costs us about $500 million a month to fund the bloody thing.
Trust us, the tab is not being picked up by the oligarchs who conjured about the idea to bomb the dictatorship. They broke it and we bought it.
Just look around you, Philadelphia.
Can't you see our end is near if we don't teach ourselves the local consequences of Bush's War.
The city's poorest will suffer the hardest, there will be too few cops on the street to do anything about the bedlam, the murder count will soar, and yuppies will have their car tires slashed.
Wait, life in this town is already like this. Crap!

That movie was the bomb... I walked away stunned. Seems that only the jolly, old, Brits can make a decent film these days.
Anyway, I saw it on Saturday, and I remember after the movie, all the news anchors were proclaiming the unseasonable weather as "Great Weather!" or "Extremely Nice Weather." "I'll be sorry to see this weather go."
What does that really mean? The fact that the our warm weather is probably an apocolyptic sign of a detiorating eco-system. That we as Americans relish our last meal before the execution? Like we can't see the electric chair in the next room?
The Brit dystopian movies seem to have a knack of jolting you to focus on the realities of our current situation.
