Readers of this site already know that race has been a hot topic on the blog lately, although neither member of Philly Confidential has written a post directly related to the subject. Two articles came to PC's attention over the weekend that pissed her off beyond repair. We were in such a tiff, that we had to share the pieces with our Philly Confidential pals.
The first piece was a New York Times story on the heritage of San Diego Chargers' LaDainian Tomlinson. According to the report, the celebrity athlete's bloodline stems from Texas slaves.
The reporter visits Tomlinson's hometown (well, its too small to be a town) and talks to the jock's dad and neighbors. The reader soon learns that Tomlinson 's surname is, in fact, the same as his forefather's owners. (Shocking, yet a reality of this country's shameful history.)
Then the story goes on to quote a resident who remembered Tomlinson as a boy when: Neighbors used to watch the young LaDainian dash from one house to another, often accompanied by his favorite pet, a black-and-white Poland China hog. “He was fast,” said Jewel Hodges, a Tomlinson Hill resident. “He was always fast.”
Details like those gave the story a nauseating undertone. To equate the football hero with his pig-filled childhood didn't sit right with PC. But she moved on with her weekend.
Hours later, PC read Newsweek's exclusive interview with Reade Seligmann— one of the accused Duke University Lacrosse players in the now infamous rape case -- and had to fight off the urge to chuck her laptop out the closest window.
The piece detailed Seligmann's life as a suspected criminal, and it was written to entice the reader' sympathy.
Read the excerpt and get ready to fight back the tears:
The morning he was taken into custody and saw for the first time the back seat of a police car, it was surreal, he says. While he was getting fingerprinted, he momentarily found himself marveling at how cool the machine was before he snapped back and realized it was his finger in the ink. Sitting in his jail cell, he still didn't comprehend how completely his life had changed. Spotting a sign in Spanish, his first thought was that he had to study for an exam in the subject.
PC was disgusted. If you know the details of the Duke case, you know that the accuser is far from Girl Scout of the Year, but the Newsweek story seemed more like a press release for the accuser than a news article. The writer really seemed to empathize with the young man – portrayed as a handsome, athletic, white-male, from a good American family, forever damaged by the legal ordeal.
But wait, there is the more.
The reporter on the story, Susannah Meadows, is a Duke alum so says her employers' site. No wonder why Meadows has been churning out exclusive after exclusive on the case, snagging details no other reporter even came to close to getting.
It is nice to see that the good ole'-boy network is starting to include women.
Wonder when they will open it up to blacks?

The Duke jocks behavior was boorish, yet no where near the level of depravity of the actions of two LaSalle jocks who were aquitted of rape last year.
Unlike the Duke trio, the LaSalle duo admitted to double stuffing a female who was intoxicated and vomiting. While rape was not proven, this is not the behavior of gentlemen. I have no idea of her race, probably caucasian, but I did not hear any condemnation of the LaSalle jocks actions.
Due to the color of their skin, the victim's drunken state and poor decision of being in the company of vulgarians, the LaSalle hoopsters walked. The violated woman subjected to further violation by the system.

More or less nothing seems important. I've just been letting everything happen without me recently. I can't be bothered with anything recently, but such is life. My life's been generally bland today. Not much on my mind these days, but eh.
