State of the scrUnion

Some of you might have passed on watching the State of the Union tonight.
PC can't blame you. Listening to another monotone Bush speech, while watching congressional members cheer him on like a high school pep rally, isn't exactly fun.

Doesn't matter though. 'Cause PC watched it for you, and she picked up on how Bush's words will directly affect this murderous town.

So said Bush, according to Fox News:

"First, we must balance the Federal budget. We can do so without raising taxes. What we need to do is impose spending discipline in Washington, D.C. We set a goal of cutting the deficit in half by 2009 — and met that goal 3 years ahead of schedule. Now let us take the next step. In the coming weeks, I will submit a budget that eliminates the Federal deficit within the next 5 years. I ask you to make the same commitment. Together, we can restrain the spending appetite of the Federal Government, and balance the Federal budget".

So why should Philadelphia care about these few words?
Simple.

Cities like ours have been--and will always be--hurt by our wonderful president's money plans.

He doesn't want to raise taxes, but wants to continue cutting the deficit, at a time when the Iraq war is costing us taxpayers about $9,000,000,000 per month.
Yes, per month.

The Bush Administration has to pay for their mess some how, and they are doing so by making our lives miserable.
(How naive is PC?
She always figured the health and safety of U.S. citizens were a priority for any American president.
Ah, the joys of being young and dumb.)

The Philadelphia Police Department has lost about $3 million over the last few years and now the housing authority said they had to cut over 300 jobs because of the lack of federal funding. Just last week, PC's favorite city hall reporter wrote a story highlighting Mayor Street's view on the Iraq War, i.e. its crippling public services.

Even Jesse Jackson had a say about the effects of the costly war on Regular America:

"Or think about major national imperatives. The Apollo Alliance has detailed a program for energy independence -- $30 billion a year for 10 years would free us from our dependence on Persian Gulf oil, begin to address catastrophic climate change and generate 3 million jobs here at home. We could pay for the whole agenda with what we've spent over the last two years in Iraq. To make us more secure, five days in Iraq would pay for radiation detectors needed at all U.S. ports, rejected thus far due to cost. Two days would pay for detectors to scan 100 percent of all cargo on passenger planes. Two more days would pay to make emergency radio systems interoperable -- which still hasn't happened five years after Sept. 11. Five days would allow us to double federal spending for police on our streets... We are a wealthy nation, but we cannot squander what economists estimate may total up to $2 trillion on a misbegotten war abroad without paying the price here at home".

Losing more than 3,000 U.S. soldiers in the Bush War is sickening enough. Now, we are learning that this war is wreaking havoc on the so-called American dream. Remember that the FBI said the national murder rate increased last year by 1.4 percent. And, that the kill count for sizable American cities increased by 8 percent during the same time period.

Bush always goes on about terrorism and the threat of Muslim extremists. But, he doesn't need to fly to the Middle East to stare down an Iraqi insurgent or a Hezbollah fighter to feel some fear.
He just needs to move to North Philly for a while, minus the Secret Service, to see how Americans are terrified of their own neighbors.

Really, do you feel safe walking down a Philadelphia street?
PC sure doesn't.

Investing in the inner-cities won't make Bush's friends/backers rich. It will only make the working/middle class better off. And, we know that's not what the U.S. is about. If Bush had his way, we'd all be working at Walmart, driving Hummers, and in debtor's prison when we couldn't make the interest payments on our credit cards. Keep the people in the hole... especially the ones that buy in, and proclaim that this country is the best in the world.

You know a large part of that $9,000,000,000 goes to the companies that are contracted to "rebuild" Iraq. The connection between this war, and Haliburton profit is obscene. Cheney, and Bush should be impeached for the gross mishandling of the war, and the obvious corruption between escalating the war, and additional funds.

So did anyone read this story? Or, see the Blitzer interview with Cheney?

Are these guys off their rockers? The Bush administration reminds me of the guys in the hood that carry pieces out in the open. And, when they are confronted by the cops, they basically commit suicide by refused to drop the gun. Is our country being run by a few crooks who refuse to drop their guns?
