Stories like this one crop up from time to time: a parent gets aggravated or indifferent (or both) and smothers or pummels their tot to death. They horrify you to your core and prompt a question that has no justifiable answer: what can possibly cause a person to kill their own child?
Last week, Troy Thomas became the latest parent to be on the receiving end of that question. Thomas, 25, was arrested for smothering his autistic 23-month-old son, Shaemar Nelson-Thomas, in the basement of the toddler's grandmother's home. Shaemar was a couple weeks shy of turning 2. It's a precious, innocent age, when little ones simply want to be loved and to enjoy every waking moment by laughing and running around.
Thanks to physical therapy, Shaemar had just recently learned to stand and crawl. Running was still a long way off, but his family hoped that with additional therapy, he would soon learn to speak. Instead, he died on a mattress while his mother, Tuesday Nelson, slept next to him. He died next to his father, who was a few feet away from his most treasured possessions -- his TV and his two Xbox systems. Nelson's mother theorized that the little boy playfully kicked at his father in an attempt to get attention while Thomas was busy with his Xbox games. 
Sadly, it's not the first time we've covered a story about a parent murdering their child over video games. Just last September, we wrote about 1-year-old Alayiah Turman, who was killed after she fiddled with her father's Xbox. Tyrone Spellman, 25, wrote a 3-page confession, detailing a vicious attack that began when Alayiah tugged at the Xbox's cords.
Thomas hasn't written any confessions. In fact, he said nothing to Shaemar's relatives -- not when the paramedics arrived at their Kingsessing rowhome, fruitlessly hoping to save the boy, and not when he was behind bars at Police Headquarters. (On the flip side, DN reporter Dana DiFilippo found that Thomas does have a history of violent attacks. And DHS has had extensive involvement with Shaemar's family, just as they did with Alyaiah Turman's family.)
It's difficult to be "shocked" by a murder in a city that is on track once again to post a higher homicde tally than the year before. But it's impossible to make sense of it.
