Stop Snitchin' -- The New Imus?

You know something is detrimental to humanity when Anderson Cooper is on the case.
The girl-half of Philly Confidential was shocked, yet thrilled, when she turned on CNN last night and saw Andy tackling our nation's Stop Snitchin' problems.

True, the Daily News first reported on the crisis two years ago, and both members of this blog appeared in a hip-hopumentary on the issue last spring. Still, PC was excited to see that Snitchin' is becoming a hot issue for the mainstream media.
Well maybe just for Cooper who has also extensively reported on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the racial disparities behind starting a new life after the storm.
Has Cooper replaced Clinton as the celebrity white-haired white man who actually cares about people outside his own race?

Andy's report wasn't even for his employer, it appeared on 60 Minutes, and PC watched a clip on CNN just a few hours ago.

CBS and CNN, huh?
Think about it for a second.

If the same media machine that went gaga for Imus a few weeks ago began to rally against Stop Snitchin', the justice-hating crowd will finally have a formidable foe.

The Imus saga all boiled down to racism, correct?
That is why NBC and CBS canned him, right?
Meanwhile, Stop Snitchin' is doing far more damage to the national black community than some old ignorant bigot.

Snitchin' is endemic to black urban communities, and also feeds into the unpublicized black murder crisis infesting Philadelphia and many other large poor cities. Around 83 percent of ALL of Philly's homicide victims were black last year. The numbers were about the same in 2005, 2004, etc.
Why are so many young blacks killing each other?

Check out a Harlem based advocate had to say during the Cooper report:

When I was growing up, kids used to talk about snitching…. It never extended as a cultural norm outside of the gangsters," says Geoffrey Canada, a nationally recognized educator and anti-violence advocate. "It was not for regular citizens. It is now a cultural norm that is being preached in poor communities."

Canada has been working with children in Harlem for more than 20 years. He grew up poor in a tough New York neighborhood, but says the message kids are getting today is very different and dangerous.

"People are walking around with shirts. People are going out making, making music. People are saying things that if you're a snitch it's like being an Uncle Tom was when I was growing up," Canada says. "It's like you can't be a black person if you have a set of values that say, 'I will not watch crime happen in my community without getting involved to stop it.'"

PC is still trying to figure out the root causes behind the astounding stats, but she believes self-imposed racism should be on the list. Almost every week on cable TV and on the radio, PC hears the n-word in rap songs and listens in dismay as some hip-hopper insults the law and anyone who abides by it.

Interestingly, Cooper doesn't point the finger at the rappers, he blames the record industry for marketing the trash-hop and exploiting the violent inner-city culture with the sole interest of earning profits.

Wow, if the rest of big media joined the fight to focus on the root cause/funding behind this epidemic of violence, we might take a step towards figuring out exactly what cog in the machine is broken.

Well done Cooper, you have way more PC Street Cred than any one those bling-bling clowns.

Mr. Black Sociologist:

"Snitching" and the rest of Gansta-Rap and Generation X. The whole Sub-Culture has it's orgins from the State Prisons, throughout America, where it seems a large percentage of Black males go. Not because of Racism, but because, they refuse to follow the Rules/Norms of the American Dream; that by the way, has worked for me. I lived on the mean streets of Chicago, and once was accused of "snitching" by about 12 gang bangers who tried to jump me at my door step one night. A few in the bunch wanted to have a sexual relationship with my 17 year old daughter; and that night they told me so but as if they were shouting it to one of their peers; real vulgar. I was forced to move to the Suburbs, where the sight of a young black male, frightens me and sounds an alarm. But, there is a correlation between Prison Culture and the Culture that has taken over or, that is being infused by the vacuum in the Black Communities by Gangbanger's of every age. By fear and violence; coupled with a larger society that is considered white, uncaring and alienated; these black gangster's have made black communities criminal enterprises. They use black young boys 8 years old to 17 to terrorize the community; the one's 18 to 24 to carry out murders; the older ones to control the big money hustles: drugs, gun running, etc.

It is sickening. You tell in prison, you a snitch. Now, you tell in your neighborhood you are a snitch. You wear no belt, let your pants sagg, same as in the prison. Black people unfortunately have been cursed by so much ignorance.

Why hasen't the continent, Sub-Sahara Africa improved economically: Criminially intent leaders who steal the peolpe's money and use violence and fear to suppress freedom to the peolpe.

I'm a black man, and it hurt's deeply. If it was up to me, most of these gangbangers would be in Prison or lined up for the Firing Squad for Treason; however, this is not a Black country and I can't do this.

WHITE FLIGHT:

I can understand not ratting out a drug dealer, but a murderer,No wonder wherever black people move, white families move out by dozens.

Joe:

I moved out of Philly over 30 years ago. I saw what was coming. As White Flight posted, whites move when blacks move in because they know what to expect. Whites don't move because of the color of blacks' skins. They move because of the negative baggage that they bring with them. I know it's only a small minority that cause the problems, but it's enough for whites not to take a chance of staying. Philly is becoming the Dodge City of the East.

Marty weinstein :

Not to bust on black people but, their prioroties are ass backwards, they were in an uproar over don imus's comments. But,they wont tell on people killling there own people.Like mom always said to me.
GOD HELPS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELVES.I have no sympathy for these people.Only the innocent ones in the crossfire. And from someone living in the suburbs, bryn mawr, this is old news philly has alwys stunk.I have no idea why the media thinks murder and no snitching is new my guess, history is repeating and it bleads it leads.

Anonymous:

Read about Bill Clinton. Your white haired friend is no friend to blacks.

Mr. Black Sociologist:

Just this morning on the Metra ride into to Chicago, I see this black kid about 22 with a jacket on that reads "State Property" as I alluded to before, this is Prison "lingo".

During the 60's, when most American cities had plenty of factory jobs, we didn't see this violence or wanton mayhem and total breakdown of society in the black communities because most males worked at legit jobs. By the mid 80's through 90's or, during Reagan and Bush's presidential occupancy of the white house: 1980 thru 1992, we saw these drastic developements: the lost of manufactoring jobs/factories in America; increase in drug trafficking in inner cities; a cut back in all social service grants to inner cities. There always have been a small criminal element in the Black community; no different than in any other community regardless of Race. However, with manufactoring jobs gone, and a proclivity systematically to exclude black's(male's) from the Trade's: plumbing, construction, carpentry, pipe fitting-etc., a large percentage of Black males instead of being unemployed or working in poor service paying jobs, began to supplement their earnings by becoming criminals. The small percentage of criminals then doubled and tripled in the Black communities across America.

When I was a kid 40 years ago, I wanted to grow up to be like Mickey Mantle, or Stan Muscial or Willie Mays or a Texas Ranger, or Superman( a hero). I wanted to help "old-ladies" across the street; be a boy scout..In other words, do what was right. Now, kids want to grow up to be killers, gangsta's. They don't want to help you they want to rob you, murder you, take what's yours; take your girlfriend, your wife, shoot your kids, disrupt classrooms. Beat up kids who still want to do right. Hustle, prostitute your daughters. And, "Glorify" Prison and incarceration. This my friend is what is happening in the Black Community. And I'm Black and I know, cause I see it everyday.

In Chicago on the Southside and Westside where the there are majority Black neighborhoods, the Gangs, control the streets, and they control them Day and especially night through Spring, Summer, Fall and yes, Winter. The good black folks go to church, try to raise their kids right, try to help the police and work but these gangbangers have increased and have made elementry and middle school and highschool "war zones". The street's War Zones.

I'm black. I am so sicken by the things I have said, but they need to be said. I haven't said anything about Imus, but in a word, he was-WRONG.

Just remember: Gangsta Rap, Generation X, Hip hop is just a engine to disseminate Prison Culture and to Glorify and make incarceration/prison a value instead of being something immoral. If you look at Rap and how it has evolved and see the parallel's/images of prison, and it's overall glorification of criminal lifestyles; then, see the shape black communities are in across America, and compare and contrast, you then can connect all the dots.

Snoop Dog just called black women "ho's" and the "b" words, as soon as they interviewed him a few days after Imus's debunking. Snoop is a "white collar criminal. He get's a kick out of poisoning the black communitey with filthy lyric's; but, I bet he sends his boys to all white schools. This is the ignorance of Black people. I'm Black and I know.

Look at Africa. Their Leaders are keeping that continent in poverty. The Richest continent on the Planet with leader's who are intelligent as Snoop Doggy Dog with criminal intent has destroyed that continent. And the same thugs are destroying the Black communities in America.

The majority of Black folks are hard working citizens, but the thugs and criminals are increasing and I think account for 1/4 of the communities. They need to be stopped.

Mr. Black Sociologist:

When I was a boy growing up in the late 50's and early 60's, in the Nation; in the Black Communities the: criminal element stood out. These were the guys who were anti-establishment: didn't go to school, dressed unconventionally, dare-devils, disrupting classrooms, didn't go to church, and called you a sissy if you weren't tough or crazy acting like them. Sure there was peer pressure.

However, a small minority of people acted out. The majority of my friends had an opportunity to improve themselves and they did by joining the service, going on to college,or seeking employment just after highschool. Then, guys got married.

I want the same things for the kids today. A simple and civilized life. I feel that the mother's in the black communities in "Philly" and across Black American Neighborhoods, would love to see this implosion of violence ameileorated/mitigated/abated.

When, other Ethnic groups talk about their future, and next generations, Black people will have to report the "Lost Generation" that we have to offer. Our young people, are being "locked up" in Prisons across this country for breaking the law, and trying to be gangsta's. They are doing at a minimal 20 years. Who is raising they're children? Who is being a Role Model or Father figure to their Children? How are their lives now. Locked up 20 or more years where Violence is supreme, locked in a little cell. That's a horrible life, but this is what these young black Gangbangers are choosing over: simple, legit and civil lives of : work, church, family, school and civic responsibility.

25 years from now, there want be any Black males to marry all the successful Black females because they will be DEAD or in Prison. What a Legacy, for the Black Man. 400 years of Slavery and Jim Crow. A Civil Right's Movement that was successful by Martin Luther King and others who sacrifice life and limb and successful careers. Then, a few Black generations who have given up on themselves and rather, chose life a a criminal. That's low man. That goes against God's Laws, Man's Laws. And when you refuse to follow Laws: God's a Human Laws you become a "Beast", a "Animal". And Im sorry but a lot of these gang banger's, criminally intent black men that are selling drugs and so violent and bringing fear and mayhem/anomie to Black neighborhoods: YOu are sick Animals and you need to be exterminated. No, a White guy didn't say this I did, A Black Man, who has watched your senseless ignorance for going on 25 years.

Looking for a Leader:

Much of the blame should not lie with the Hip Hop artists and "Gangsters". These are often very young people who are lost.

The most disturbing ones are those who are viewed as national leaders of the Black Community.

When Bill Cosby stands up and says black parents need to know where there teenagers are, he is attacked by the leaders of the black community. When he says these same parents need to ensure their kids do their homework and study, he is attacked. When he is attacked, every black leader from Jesse Jackson to Eddie Murphy should be out preaching hard work. Luckily there are some like Will Smith trying to carry the fight, but far too few.

There is racism is in the United States.
Some people will discriminate against people because of their race.

The answer, however, is to not give up and say you will not try until it goes away.

The answer is to work hard.
Help Each other.
Help your children.
Help your neighbors children.

Mr. Black Sociologist, thanks for posting your comments. Hopefully you can make a difference.

Mr. Black Sociologist:

This is no joke. People need to get off their personal agenda's and stop defending things/behavior that are sinful and illegal and are not apart of African Culture Historically.

I'm afraid, that the unlearned are not aware that "history" repeat's itself! Never forget that. The Jewish Community is not blind enough to forget that.

We live in a Cruel World and sometimes it is a Fair World, but often times just and fair to individuals, groups are a Race that can defend itself and be strong and secure.

A strong China, South and North Korea, and strong Japan, has helps in small measure the lives of ordinary Asians throughout the world. Other culture's respect them because they have nations that have: Means of Productions, Sound Governments/stable, health care systems, educational systems. In a word-Social Order. Short of this and when these countries lacked some of these they were attacked and attempts were made to Colonize them. Asian nations didn't succumb. Now, their people all over the world can enjoy some semblance of respect and dignity. India is following suit.

Now, take a look at African's and African's throughout the Diasporia. We are dependent. We are the Richest continent on Planet Earth; yet, Foreigner's control our Raw Material's. We can't feed ourselves. We cannot Educate ourselves. We have no Health Systems. NO transportation system. No vialble Military Systems in Place. The African Continent has not in the last 50 years since Colonialism was over, understood that their most precious resource is the People. The people of Africa, are treated worse than the Nazi's treated Jews in WWII. Colonialism is dead, but African Leaders lead by the Gun and not by judicious government.

My point is this. The World will not Respect you as a Black Person when you show the world that you do not or are not willing to Govern Yourselves, FEED yourselves, provide Health Care Systems, Military Systems, and Educate your people. When the world sees that instead, your leader's would rather keep the massess of the population in abject poverty by force of the bullet and machine gun; when the only people elgible for freedom are the leaders and the military all across Africa, this is sick.

This is why, Arab/Islamic Countries to the NOrth East of Africa is slowing infiltrating and causing upheavel in those countries. In another 25 years, if the trend doesn't change: Chad, Ethiopia, Somalia the Sudan all will be Arabian countries. Asian's and India will control most of the Business or Means of Production on the continent of Africa.

Well, what does that mean for Black people in America who has generation after generation of young black people glorifying Prison culture; who hates education, think education is for faggots. Who love to hang on corner's instead of hang out in Libraries. Who are anti-establishment, anti-marriage, anti-education, anti-family. Pro-gangbanging, pro-murder, pro-criminality. They do not read the news papers and see what's going on on the World scene. They don't see that because of their Ignorance and the Ignorance of the Black male world wide that one day you will look up and have no historical Continent to call HOME.

Your so-called strong your brother's are imitating manhood by being criminals and are filling up the jails/prisons for long stretches of sentencing: 20 to 50 years. IN 25 years, your Black women will be married to Men of other Races cause most of you dummies will still be locked up in Prison. And the sad thing, is do not become so violent that the very government you live under the United States of America doesn't get Leaders 25 years from now that Pass Executive Laws and Orders to have you legally exterminated and all the Civil Right's Laws/Gained Rolled Back.

There are some serious things going on in this world, and we have a generation of black folks, more engrossed with the latest dance, the latest slang, "snitching" learning the latest Prison Culture; killing each other, killing your own Brother over senseless nonsence. When you finally look up you will be a 1845 Slave again and and Africa will be Re-Colonized. It ain't funny my friend. The same behavior that got you in Slavery 400 years ago hasn't changed. And the same Intolerance your Ignorance is building with other Races will make you again Prime Candidates for your Demise, in the 22nd Century. God has spoken threw me to you. Better listen up.

Chris:

Sorry Simone, the Imus issue was about money not racism- NBC & CBS didn't want their advertisers to stop spending money. Sharpton wanted ratings too so he could continue to make money (for doing nothing - when did he become the arbiter of what is right and wrong in society... Tawana Brawley anyone?). Russell Simmons really only cares about making more money since BabyPhat and his other companies continue to promote the ghetto-fabulous lifestyle.
Until the Philly murder epidemic really affects white, upper-middle-class, center city residents, nothing will be done. Blacks killing blacks is considered fine, just keep it in your neighborhoods.
No one really listens to the "black community" because it has no voice. Cosby, Obama, Sharpton et al are all millionaires who may talk the talk, but don't walk the walk.

Uh Chris,

What exactly can be done to stop the murder epidemic? The city is out of money (no additional cops), the ACLU wont allow arbitrary stop and search (violation of constitutional rights), and the black community wont help itself (stop snitchin). How the H*** can you blame this on whitey?

mike l:

Somehow, I don't believe that this is what Martin envisioned. In many ways it seems that whites and blacks are farther apart socially than before Martin's time.
Yes, blacks could rightfully blame "the Man" for Jim Crow laws and bigotry, but what about now? While racism is not totally eradicated, blacks have fared much better over the last 40 years. Economic and educational opportunities are vast, but those who seem to want to get ahead by work and education, get ridiculed as turning white or being sellouts. It's all about the bling and how quick you can get it.

dr mckillswitchengage:

No additional cops, yeah right .Knox is adding a thousand.Jim perzel is adding 1300 hundred.I hope they dont take that on the back of philly taxpayers it wont even help. The people who will be paying for them wont even see them. These communities dont deserve them until they do their part and liberal people like simone wont hold them accountable. No wonder there poor and ignorant.

JB:

The prison attitude that is so prevelent today is doing more damage to the black community than 1000 Don Imus' could ever do. And until that changes, until merchants stop profiting from it, nothing will ever change.

Walking on the street I saw a young black man wearing a "State Property" shirt. Why would anyone sell that shirt, let alone buy it? Why doesn't that young man realize what that says to someone who knows nothing about him? Is it that appealing to feel like a criminal, to know that when he's with a group of friends likely dressed that he is now thought to be part off a gang of criminals, and when he travels around his home that others will think he lives in a dangerous community simply because he wants to "represent". That ignorant young man has disgraced his entire community with his misplaced priorities.

How will anyone ever look at this young man as anything but a criminal if his actions, choices, and attitudes seem to say that he is? Who would ever get close enough to him to know him other wise.

We don't want people who have been to prison, actual criminals, to live in our communities. Countless websites help you find them and more and more laws try to limit where they can go and live. And yet we sell clothing and merchandise that advertise our desire to be affiliated with that lifestyle.

The bottom line is this: If you demonstrate that you want to be some sort of gansta, you will be treated that way. And the treatment means the system will find a way of imprisoning you, alienating you, and handicapping you from ever doing anything meaningfull with your life. and the peopel making the money preaching it and selling it to you are the most to blame.

There is a place for ignorance and I hate to say most of our colored folks won't get it until they are, - dead or prison - God rest the souls that were caught up in the madness and life taken away by senseless fools - and Snitch - in a heart beat - if it will save a person, family or community - there is no code - how about putting all of that gangsta crap energy into education

Jake:

I love rap music...but let's face it...ever since the hip-hop culture emerged, it has been devastating to the black community.

A lot of white suburban folks love hip-hop because they don't really have to suffer the consequences of it. But with blacks in the inner-city, hip-hop has real, everyday implications: violence, drug dealing, materialism, consumerism, broken families, plenty of "baby mammas," poor education, etc etc.

Is there one single positive thing to come from hip-hop?

just a hose will do:

I hate to comment on this cause i could care less about dirty philly and less than 4 miles away but i will sum up the problem in one quote by THEIR beloved leader.

Blacks have been slowly birthed into this situation of not trusting not only the supposed "helpers" but those in our own communities. Matt.:

Hip hop portrays gangster life and the young blacks buy into it. I live in a area outside of Philly and the young black kids act as if they are from the inner city. Their parents have college degrees and full time jobs and yet the children dress as gangsters and portray the lifestyle they see on TV. Its black on black crime. It has nothing to do with racism.

Imus made a bad joke and the black community got him fired because of it. I hear black comedians portray whites in a disrespectful manner all of the time and call them names. You don't see the white community start rallies about. Now white people can't speak their minds about a subject pertaining to blacks because they will be calle a racist. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton some how became the leaders of all blacks and can tell a whole community what is right and what is wrong. Blacks need to stop blaming the white people for their situation now. I dont make kids move out into the subburbs and start the gangster life there, they do it to themselves. You don't have white kids moving to Philly and setting a record pace of homicides.

Therefore I must be a racist because I don't have the same view as black people on their situation. Please do speak more broken english even though it is your native language and I will take you even more seriously.
