I have often disagreed with you on articles but this one is right on the mark.
Maybe both papers should front page every "innocent" murder and keep a running box tally so that people can't escape or lump the killings together. Several times a week we have young people apply for jobs as dishwashers or prep cooks. They are mad as hell when they find out they will only make $9 an hour. Almost every one of them talks about the cars they see on Pimp My Ride or the mansions they see on MTV Cribs.
With no education, training or skills they want an entry-level job that will get them $300,000 cars and multi-million dollar mansions. Young America truly has been brainwashed into expecting these thigs without having to work for it.

I was reading this story, b/c my son Jahmere Randall was killed crossing Roosevelt Blvd on October 10, 2006. Though he was not killed due to gun violence or drugs it really does not matter b/c it has altered my family and friends' lives forever. My children were on the right path, but they have lost hope. Hope of a better tomorrow or for that matter hope for the future. They have stopped caring about everything and anything. My son's death though may have been an accident, has truly effected our lives in which it has affected the outcome of the next generation in my family. I am currently trying to get them to see that we can not let this accident cause us to give up HOPE. But how do you give them hope when you see for yourself things are getting BAD. I should say worse, when are we going to education people.

People are people n matter what the color, we really need to stop treating them as if we just do not care what happens. We also need to stop making every killing a racial killing. The number of murders in this city now, do not matter what color they were b/c they are all died and most looked to be interacial. So please take color out of the equation.

As you state in your article, these children that are doing the killing or selling drugs are some of the children that have been affective by the crack from the 80's. Furthermore, they may have been the children that parent or parents were killed or locked up, society has turned their back as well as their families. We go to meetings of the Police District Advisory Council, and community meetings with police in order to get info and give info.

That doesn't mean we don't "get it."

Far from just wanting to "gentrify" neighborhoods, middle class Philly residents want to make them better for everyone.

For every article on how awful it is to raise and collect taxes on the "poor," the flip side is that it keeps schools rotten and police underfunded.

For those of us not interested in waiting for the fed and state handouts that may or may not come, we're saying collect the $622 million in overdue property taxes, sell off the surplus city property to the highest bidder and get it back in the tax base, instead of vacant factories, empty lots, and run down unoccupied houses stuck in limbo because the city won't collect fast enough at sheriff sale.

The politicians think that not collecting local property taxes preserves their core constituency. This bankrupt logic assumes that a large, deadly ghetto is needed to elect Democrats locally.

There is a whole list of top 100 tax delinquents on www.hallwatch.org. Check it out. Those millions should have been collected years ago at the sale of the property for back taxes to the highest bidder, which is how normal cities work.

That is the answer. Can the city politicians have the guts to hold their supporters accountable for paying their fair share? Will the new mayor start collecting back taxes again, instead of just raising the property taxes for those who pay in full and on time?

How else will we fund the cameras, prison space, social services, schools, probation and parole officers, improved courts, witness protection, and victim services that it will take to make that critical difference if we allow a $622 million delinquent property tax rate as a city?

It's not that "we" don't care. It's that Philly has a pay to play political culture that holds city controlled assets as a carrot for the most generous contributor at the expense of functional government.

I'm not going to argue with you because I agree with you to a certain extent. While there are bad elements in the black community, there are just as many bad elements in other communities regardless of race. And while there are many dilapidated crime ridden neighborhoods populated by Blacks, there are just as many prominent Black neighborhoods-Prince George County, MD being one of the most prominent.

I was born and raised in Philly and it pains me to see the city slowly deteriorating because of the crime. I agree with Don, the problem starts in home. parents/family are the first line of defense in combating violence. It will take an aggressive, sincere, and strong effort on the part of all Philadelphians who genuinely love the city to take it back from the thugs who are terrorizing it and its residents.

I think our city is stuck in a perpetual cycle of hopelessness. No jobs, no leadership, no opportunities. I think the time has come for Philadelphians to seriously consider putting another party-be it Republicans, Independents, etc.-in power and dismantling the Democratic party machine that cripples the positive growth of the city and seems all too content to sit back and let one of its core constituencies struggle in poverty. I'm not endorsing any candidate, but if Philly is going to move forward then its residents will have to move it forward.
