Today, we devote Behind the Badge to Officer Gary Skerski. Below is an excerpt of our profile of the slain police veteran. You can read the full text here.
SIMPLY PUT, Officer Gary Skerski lived to help other people.
Those who knew him best said the 16-year police veteran had a seemingly endless well of warmth and compassion that he dipped into whenever someone called out to him during their hour of need.
And lots of people - from troubled camp counselors to high school buddies from long ago - had called on Skerski.
"He just loved helping people," said Officer Christine Murphy, who had partnered with Skerski for the past three years as a member of the 15th Police District's crime- prevention unit.
Murphy noted, "There's not a person or a community group in this district who doesn't know Gary.
"When you needed help, he was the one. He'd take the shirt off his back for you. I know it sounds like a cliche, but it's all true. He was good to his community and a great police officer. He was good all the way around."

Posted by: Chris A. at May 19, 2006 10:48 AMMy heart goes out to the Skerski family. The police department lost a great man. He was not only kindhearted and caring but also a hard working community relations officer. He will be sadly missed by all.

“The bitterest thing in our today's sorrow is the memory of our yesterday's joy.”
Destiny comes suddenly, without ever knowing what God’s plan is for our lives. When the news came, I stood there with tears in my eyes and mercy in my heart, no words came, only silent sorrow and absolute disbelief.
When death strikes close by, we suffer. Especially when it is taken by the hands of a thief! We immediately wonder where can we find comfort, and with what can we replace it?
We are flooded with memories, stories and moments of a man who affected our lives by his generous actions, kindness, support and encouraging words.
I pray that God consoles the wounded hearts of Gary’s family, the officers of the 15th District who served with him, friends who loved him, and the lives he saved that tragic night at Pat’s Café.
I pray for comfort and consolation.

When a low life kills a cop along with the bullet comes a message. The low life is telling
us that he has no respect for human life, or The law that we the people depend on, need,
and cherish.
Officer Gary Skerski. answer a call from the people, and paid the price with his life. It could
have been your call to police. This was not the first officer killed in the line of duty, and
It will not be the last, but if you call 9-11 today, or tomorrow they still will come and serve.
God bless these fine men and women in blue they are our protectors.
My condolences to Gary's family , friends & fellow officers.
To each and every police officer, firefighter & all other first responders out there who forget about their own lifes with each & every call THANK YOU. ALL YOU PEOPLE ARE AMAZING.
These following men numbers & dates will always be remembered by this PROUD AMERICAN.
