Safe Trees Grow in Brooklyn
The Brooklynite-half of PC drove up to her hometown last weekend to hang out with her childhood dogs. The doggie and blogger crew spent the entire day roaming around Prospect Park, the borough's version to Fairmount Park minus the fear.
This young lady felt so safe, that she and her pets walked off the paved paths of the Long Meadow to explore the urban forest portion of the park. Meanwhile, there were NYPD officers riding around on mountain bikes all over the place. Their presence made the day-o-fun possible.
But back in Philly, would this half of PC dare to explore the back woods of Fairmount Park?
Heck no.
PC understands that Philly cops are needed in more vulnerable areas in the city, but she rarely sees one bike cop out and about on Fairmount Park's main paths. And that is scary.
Remember the 2003 Rebecca Park case?
She was the 30-year-old medical student raped and stabbed during her jog in Fairmount Park.
Her killer was never caught.
Yikes!
Still, Prospect Park has not been crime free.
Muggers have pounced on folks during the past few months, but the NYPD
has still said crime is down for the area.
Nonetheless, this half of PC wishes for the day when she can jog or bike in Fairmount Park without a dose of fear for her life.
I disagree with your assessment of Fairmount Park. We all know that different sections(or neighborhoods) of the city are unsafe; the same is true about different sections of Fairmont Park. The main path of Fairmount Park, that starts at Boathouse Row and runs up to Temple Boathouse (ie. Strawberry Mansion Bridge), is very safe; it is approx. 2 miles from Boathouse row to Temple BH. FYI - There is a Police Marine Unit located in the same structure at the Temple Boathouse; they are there during most daylight hours. On the contrary, where the woman was murdered is not so safe; it's on the opposite side of the river in a remote area; I would not run by that path after daylight hours.
