Seen on the Depressing Scene
It was a sight straight out of one those Barbershop films. A small Nicetown shop was packed with men either cutting hair, receiving a trim, or sitting down waiting for a turn under the clippers. The topic of the moment was the afternoon murder of 15-year-old Jarrett Gore, and how he was shot dead across the street. The 30-something barbers all had different opinions about why the kid was killed and the genocidal impact of black-on-black violence.
All four barbers inside Super Wild Styles lived in the neighborhood surrounding 16th Street and Erie Avenue. Some were even raising their own children blocks from where Gore was gunned down.
"It could have been my own son," said 37-year-old Charles while trimming a woman's fade. His customer nodded in solemn agreement. Charles said he has four boys ranging in age from 13 to 17.
Outside the innocuous Erie Avenue safe haven, 31-year-old Byrd sat on a bench, thinking of all the times he has buzzed the slain teen's hair over the years.
Byrd then started talking about his own fear of death as a black man.
"You never know," he said with his head hanging down, pondering the possibility of his own violent slaying.
"We don't think as a people."
Byrd's comments resonated in the mind of this half of Philly Confidential.
In the past few months, the mainstream media has written a pretty good amount on the modern state of African-American males.
In Philadelphia last year, more than 80% of the homicide victims were black with more than a majority being black men, police have said.
Meanwhile, The New York Times ran a
story in March citing that in 2004 a fifth of black men in their 20's who were not in college were incarcerated. The piece was filled with other, more daunting statistics.
The Washington Post recently printed a series of articles titled "Being a Black Man" and ran pieces that were both uplifting and startling.
This half of Philly Confidential is slowly losing her mind as she covers one young black man's senseless murder after another. Will it ever stop?
