A little something different today ... Thought we would take you around some of the coverage of last night's game.
Each team seems to be facing an issue going into tomorrow's Game 4, but you would rather be the Flyers, happy they won Game 3 but knowing they can play better, than you would the Canadiens, possibly looking at a change in goalies from Carey Price to Jaroslav Halak.
From the Daily News
Ed Moran: Flyers not satisfied with 3-2 win
Sam Donnellon: Are the Flyers playing Canada's team?
Ed Barkowitz: Growing pains for Montreal goalie Price
Moran: Tense 15 minutes for Flyers' Hatcher
From the Montreal Gazette
Dave Stubbs: Team's character faces biggest test this season
Pat Hickey: Too little too late
Hickey: Price or Halak?
Gazette staff: More on vandalism after the Bruins series
If we hear that you -- our loyal audience -- likes seeing all the stories lined up, we will try to do more of this as the series moves ahead.
And a programming note: Ed Barkowitz will be back to live blog Game 4 on Thursday night from the Wachovia Center.

Rich Hofmann has been at the Daily News since 1980. He previously blogged the Eagles' postseason run in 2006.
Ed Barkowitz was the first Philadelphia Newspaper journalist to write a blog, starting back in 2002.

Guys,
Really like the listing of articles, especially to the Montreal paper. One request though. When I open the blog, I can't scroll down more than half a page, nor can I find an archive anywhere. I was at the game yesterday, so it'd be nice to be able to read your thoughts the next day.

Its amazing listening to these guys on the radio. They give NO credit to the Flyers. Denise Potvin said Price might hve been rattled by "Downies cheap shot, The fans booing the National anthem who knows" No credit to the team at all. Unbelievable.

Booing O Canada - a continued lack of class by Philadelphia.
We have embarrassed our entire country. No wonder we have such a bad reputation. I am finding it harder and harder to defend our fans.

The listing of the articles is great...less searching around for me to do.
I like how the Canada papers point out that Montreal "dominated" the 3rd Period, but not one article points out that they were on the power play for over half of it.
Flyers kicked a** last night. The ref's keep trying to screw us over, but we keep winning anyway. Somebody should write a book about this.

It definitely is embarssing as a Philadelphian to have our fans booing the Canadian national anthem. Do they not realize that they're booing they're own players? Come on people. Why am I always having to defend you. Act normal.
Posted by Bob | April 29, 2008 9:16 AM
Yea, Lets keep our cool during the national Anthems and save it for the games. Besides its kinda a cool song, eh????!!@#@
Posted by Hab-Knots | April 29, 2008 9:21 AM
I am putting an end to this "our fans are hooligans" crap right now. The booing of "O, Canada" was a smattering - AT BEST. I was at the game, so I would know. After the anthem was over, there was a respectful ovation for the song and the singer. This is not a story and any Canadiens fan or writer that tries to make it into one simply lacks originality. Our fans do not need "defending" because there's nothing to defend. Nothing was thrown on the ice after a five minute major was assessed in the third period...no one threw a beer on an opposing player in the penalty box (can't say that about the fans in Montreal, now, can we?)...and as I said above, the boos were scattered and barely audible above the applause. END OF STORY.

Great to hear Kevin, thanks for the insight. Im stuck up here in VT at the moment so all I get are the National commentators and fans take. Go Flyers!

What drove me crazy about yesterday's third period is that the Flyers continue to play like panicked little kids in the third period. They had a Montreal goalie who had NEVER played in the playoffs before. They should've been full throttle trying to pepper this goalie with shots. Staying in the other team's zone is the best defense. I just don't understand why they cannot handle a third period lead and often blow it or hold on for dear life. Where's the killer instinct and who are the Flyers who will demand this of the rest of the team?
Posted by Bill | April 29, 2008 10:30 AM
what blows more - The Canadiens fans.....Seems to me the "goons" are the dimwit Canadiens fans who acted like they never won a playoff series before. I mean, how freakin' desperate do you have to be to riot AFTER THE FIRST ROUND?
Posted by CSD | April 29, 2008 11:13 AM
Any video around of the Dave Mustaine message of support for the Flyers?
Posted by JL | April 29, 2008 11:15 AM
Hard to put pressure on the opposition's goalie when you're shorthanded for almost half the third period, five minutes of which were consecutive. Anyone who was on the PK was gassed by the end of that game. Remember, we also had to kill a full two-minute two man advantage in the first period as well. And, hard to keep or gain momentum when your own power play is kept off the ice from 18:00 left in the second to 3:00 left in the third. 5-on-5 we actually played pretty well. Look at the last five minutes of the second and the first five minutes of the third. We were all over them.

Thanks Kevin,
I was listening on the Radio from LA and it sounded like there might be something going on during the Canadian Anthem but I could'nt make it out through the applause. It sounds like the Candadian guys are just trying to defend Montreal for chanting over the American Anthem in Game 2.
We need to be classier than Montreal, and even with our lot, that is actually doable. =) Yeah Montreal is that bad.
I'm very concerened about officiating. This was very one-sided. Can we write Bettmen? If it's a Candadian thing, we have more Canadians than Montreal does. I'd like to hear something positive on that front. This isn't whining, we won. Technically Philly should be gloating, but we're still very concerned about these calls. I think the team should know too, so they can practice their shorthanded scoring, as those seem to be the only chances they'll get.

Sorry guys - I was at the game and at least 33% of our crowd was booing during the anthem. I told people around me to show some respect.
I agree, though, the offiating continues to be inconsistent.

There were a ton of Montreal fans on here after games one and two... Nothing but crickets now. Cowards; just like their cheap shot players.
I really hope Price remains as the starter for one more game. That way, if the Flyers can win on Wednesday and take a 3-1 lead back to Montreal, the fans can change that "Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole" chant that the rest of the world knows as a futbol chant to, "Huet, Huet, Huet, Huet."

For the game blog, I would request that the running score be posted as each goal is scored, just makes it easier to keep track as the game progresses. Great blog!

WOW! You American's are soooo typical, LOUD mouth, know it alls!!!! Typical of you whine and whine and whine! "cheap shots" on our players? Hab's do not give out "cheap shots" only "shots on cheap players"!!!! Your team is VERY WELL KNOWN through-out the NHL as being the "dirtiest" team out there! YOU bring in the cheap shots! And the fans? Well NO BETTER! Boo-ing Canada's Anthem? TYPICAL! Not only are the Flyers' loosers but the teams fans as well! OH and FYI? Check Philly's past history of the fans rioting in the streets, after a loss! Your teams' fan's lead the way!!!!!!
GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FLY PHILLY FLY!!!!!!!!!! FARRRRRRRR AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!

We're not stereotyping, are we, Nan?
I don't condone the booing of either the US or Canadian anthem. And while I wish the 33 percent at the Wac showed more respect during O Canada, don't act as if your team's fans booing the US anthem is justified. (How many Americans play for the Habs again? I counted 4.)
Now unless you're going to contribute some meaningful thoughts, take your own advice and fly far, far away.
Go Flyers!

Posted by Patt | April 29, 2008 4:04 PM
Nan,
I think you're confusing cheap with hard. Hatcher's hit was Hard, The Knee on Knee on RJ was Cheap. Hitting someone getting a puck on the boards is Hard, hitting someone after the play is Cheap. Cheap... Hard... do we have to some Sesame street Skit for you?

Althought a habs fan first and foremost I can appreciate a good organization when I see one ... I am quite astonished at seing how little time it took at improving the Flyer's lot over their difficult situation of last season ... impressive ... the fact that the rising above the ashes of last season took place without the help of Simon Gagne makes it even more impressive ... aquiring Prospal at year's end was yet another move in the right direction.... all and all you guys are presently in the second round batling well to get to the third round..... quite an accomplishment already.
Your team has presently a profile to go further,... a hot goaly, a squad with 7 players that scored 20+ goals in the regular season and as of now ... an effective PK special units.
That could be enough to win this series but the fact remain that your team has never learned how to play a tough game and be disciplined at the same time,.... Boston has that kind of game under control and they brough us close to extinction cause of it in the first round.... their roster is inferior to yours in talents but they far more pragmatic and disciplined as a team.... your ways are dysfonctionals compared with theirs..... you guys prefer whinning over adapting and learning.... the weight of tradition is the last hurdle before your franchise can really fly to new height.
Posted by zamboni | April 29, 2008 4:34 PM
Hey Nan,
Last I checked, it was you goons who tore up your own town when you won THE FIRST ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS....I know it's been a long time, but at least ACT like you guys know how to win.

Hi JL
I am not Nan ( thanks god) but I am a Montrealais,... first your post is a gem and shows a great sens of humour but still .. I have to defend my town's reputation the best I can so here we go....
People who burned the police cars were not hockey fans but an organised group of young malfaisants equiped with the necessary equipement to performed their deeds while the post game celebrations were under ways....... it really looked bad I know ... but all I can say is that Montreal is one of the safest city in north-america and that the people living here are knowned to be very friendly ( and rather good looking as far as women goes).

Zamboni,
I like you. You sound like good people. I don't want to pick out curtains or anything. But very insightful posts.
I agree the Flyers need to be more disciplined. I think they are making very good in-roads towards that. However it is hard to escape the pride of the Broad Street Bully days. Both for the players, the fans and the rest of the NHL.
It's hard to escape the scrutiny of the NHL when you are being made an example of. The Flyers do not hold the monopoly on Goons, or bullies, or penalties. We are a much smaller team than we have been in the past. Washington for example is/was a much bigger team. Yet all the annoucers talked about was how the Flyers were going to 'Rough them up'.
Right now I feel the Flyers need to play better against Monreal, they need to play together a little better. Maybe they'll feel better if they aren't killing Penalties all the time.
The aspect that they take from the '76 Flyers is their Hard-working attitude. That's why Richards is getting the big bucks. He works hard. He has that intangible quality that Yzerman, Sakic, Messier and a host of select indivituals posses. He's not Crosby or Ovechkin, but superstars don't always win hockey games.
Whoa, I'm rambling, let's wrap this up,
Go Flyers!!!!!

Didn't the Habs fans boo during the American Anthem in Montreal?
Posted by Anonymous | April 29, 2008 11:58 PM
The transition between the opening ceremonies and the singing of the Anthems is not a clear cut transition in the upper sections of this huge arena were some of the chants and cheering can still be heard in the distant backgroung for some time while the American Anthem is being performed,... people dont boo the Anthem and they applaud it at the end.
I agree with you -flyler- about Richards value as a player,... you guys knows how to draft well.... Richards seems to be a franchise quality player and the Flyers futur looks good with him on board for years to come.
Our organization took some heat in hindsight for drafting Andree Kostsitsyn instead of Richards that year,.... Richards graduated a long time ago while A.K. just did it for us this year...
we cant complain for now as he gaved us a pretty good season with 26 goals.... he's got mesmerising moves and a stellar wrist shot and I must say that I knew we would be in trouble in our series against you guys when I saw in the first game Biron stopping the penalty shot he had against him..... I mean the concoction of moves he made on Biron was nothing short of phenomenal.... yet Biron prevailled.... outch !...... the rest is history of which a new chapter is about to be written.... have a good game...
go habs
