We will go a little bilingual on you here with help from a friend of the blog ... But if we messed some of it up, pardon our French ...
If you translate the French from an article in Le Presse today, Stevens proclaims, "Only the monkey at TSN picked us to win" the series. That is a reference to Maggie, an actual monkey who picks winners for Canada's sports channel (thanks to a commenter for pointing that out).
However, we checked the video and the monkey did pick the Flyers to beat Washington, but has the Canadiens in this one.
The writer goes on to say, "Yes, Stevens is exaggerating somewhat, but it's true that the Flyers have played this series with a chip on their shoulders."
And from the chip on their shoulder department comes this from Danny Briere, also translated from French: "Nobody says anything nice about the Flyers, about our good season, about how we came back from finishing in last place last season… people talk about our suspensions and how physically we play, but it's just an image. People who follow this team closely know it's not like that."

Le Journal de Montreal compares the Flyers' Derian Hatcher to the way current Canadiens coach Guy Carbonneau used to play:
"Just like the Canadiens coach, the veteran Flyers defenseman is capable of saying things that are, shall we say, shocking on the ear," the writer says, relating to the Hatcher quote that "if I'd known I would be given a five-minute penalty [for the hit on Bouillon], I'd have done it anyway."
Josh Gorges, who plays on the back line with Bouillon, told the reporter, "I can't believe Hatcher said that… It's scary to hear words like that."

TSN has an actual monkey (named Maggie) pick playoff series. It usually does better than their "experts", all of whom had Washington over the Flyers

Actually, Hatcher said ... 'if I was going to get 5, I shouldn't have let up.'

HABS INSIDE/OUT site wants Flyers goons out ofCanadas sport. We will be leaving tonight with a WIN, and we plan to TAKE the Rocky statue, and melt it for copper. CHeap American copper.

and why should Hatcher have let up? While the 5 minute major and the game misconduct were egregious calls and certainly gave the officials the opportunity to execute the league mandate that a Canadian team go deep in the playoffs, there was no call for the clearly-intended-to-injure move that was laid upon the knees of R.J. Umberger. So- Hatcher got his "justice" for the Habs (one of many) cheap shot(s). Too bad the boo-boo that Bouillon "suffered" didn't prevent him from delivering the very brave cross-check-to-back-blind-side of Hatcher (which also, stunningly, received no attention/call) right after the fact. LET'S GO FLYERS!

great - it'll clear room for the Charles Barkley statue - looking fierce on horseback...eating a cheesesteak...
great typing skills - you must also be a qualified NHL ref or replay official.

Why can't someone hit Saku Koivu he plays with his head down along the boards. He is going to score a big one. He is hitting everything.

That's right. We are the underdogs, the forsaken, the ignored. We are the renegades, the rebels, the Bad boys of Hockey. We are both feared and reviled. We are Hardcore. We ain't the prettyboys, we aint the glamourboys, we're the Hockey players. We're the ones who say it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog. We are the Forechecking Fighters, the Board Battlers, we are the Warriors. We are the Force at the Heart of Hockey. We are Competition.
So spit on us if you must, call us for whatever penalties you're imaginations deem fit. For every bad call is a stain the soul of hockey. The Sport were Heart is more important than talent. Glory has to be earned and if we must score from the peanalty box so be it. WE ARE THE FLYERS!!!

WE ARE THE WHINERS.... dont expect universal respect until this changes.
Posted by zamboni | April 30, 2008 4:00 PM
yeah, basically Flyers fans are whiners. The experts were pretty much split on who would win the Caps/Flyers series, but they all agreed it would go 6-7 games. Considering it went to game 7 OT, the experts were dead on.
It is not us vs. the world. If that makes you feel better, fine.
The boarding call against Hatcher was correct. Boarding is the most dangerous penalty in hockey - more dangerous than knee-on-knee. Anyone that has played hockey knows this.
Please, stop the complaining about the refs/commentators/etc. and enjoy the exciting series. It is people like those on this blog that give Philly fans a bad name.

Greatly stated Braveheart Flyer Fan!!
It makes sense le crominals were surprised and scared that Hatcher said he wouldnt have let up if he knew hed get 5, but they were ok that their coach said Timmonen deserved to be cheap shotted in the face because he celebtrated a goal! These guys are unbelievable! They can do no wrong and their way is the only way. The French Frog way!
And if we didnt already know that the world of Bettmantopia is against our Flyboys, their making a big deal out of outshooting us, but it makes it easy to do that when Le Criminals have had 14 power plays to the Flyers 7. 2 to 1! Most telling stat of bias aginst our boys!

HAHA the Rocky statue is pretty lame. Pretty bad when a town has only fictional sports heroes.

It's not whinning when we're right. We don't want universal respect. We want a fair game called. We'll take our lumps, penalties, and mistakes. But your teams taking shots at us. And according to you and the NHL, we're the experts on that. So don't tell us we are some cheap shot team and then say we don't know when we're being cheap shot. We just want those shots called.

Well Ed, i think we have had plenty of sports heros in Philly. Clarke, Irving, Schmidt, Carlton, Jaworski(?) are a few that come to mind. I am only a Flyer fan, but i think that one of the greatest sports cities in the country should not be short changed! We are a TEAM town, we play together and make the team successful! By the way, you will be able to add Richards to the aforementioned list!
LETS GO FLYERS!!!

Not all Flyers fans are whining and complaining. It's the nature of blogs. And I'm sure it doesn't help when fans of other teams come on here and pound their chests. Why can't we just talk hockey? Here's a hockey point for you.. I think the winner of tonight's game 4 wins the series.
Posted by Bob | April 30, 2008 4:45 PM
Jaws as a sports hero???? We do have a pathetic history in regards to football.
I would pick Rollie well before Jaworski

The Flyers lack discipline and they want to get away with it.... its childish.
Your players can sacrifice their own team a win just to please the crowd hungry for the rought stuff.... Hatcher did it while your team was up three goals with 5 minute remaining on the clock and got nailed for it..... Richards elbowed our goaly in the face with around a minute to play in the game while you guys were only up by a single goal at that point..... Richards got away with it.... but lets face it his actions could have cost his team the game..... the momentum......and the series..... had that happened you all would have defended him and go on with the whining about the world around you.... instead of taking it as a lesson and moving onward with.
I appreciate the Flyer's game and their identity but the whining in and around it is ridiculous.

Dude I'm done listing bad & non-calls, the rough stuff has be going on since the puck dropped Game 1 and you know it. Your boys have given as good as they've got. But when BOTH teams are playing rough we're looking at 7 to 14 on Power Plays, yeah, I do and will call Shenanigans at the refs.
And you don't get to call our team undisciplined when your player punches Timmonen after a goal. Seriously, get off your soapbox on that. Even THAT diddn't draw a penalty.

Best blog on Philly.com! By far, easily better
than Will Bunch's shoe-shine Atttyood...
Keep up great work...
And goooooooooo flyers!

I lost count last night of the times a Canadian player would make a blind pass in the offensive zone only to have a Flyer skate right into the passing lane and take the puck up the ice.
And, if that wasn't bad enough for the Habs, the Flyer would skate to the other blue line pretty much unmolested.
Another thing that's hysterical is how long it takes a Hab to shoot the puck in the slot. Get the puck on the stick and shoot for cripes sakes! Habs slot players are playing awful; they dilly-dally with the puck in the slot and, BAM!, a Flyer does a smack-down and takes it away. Amazing the Habs haven't figured this out yet.
The Habs fancy/schmantzy style of play just won't cut it.
