The animosity seems to be starting to bubble over with Game 3 scheduled for Monday night at the Wachovia Center.
Flyers coach John Stevens criticized the Canadiens' Tom Kostopoulos for throwing a blindside punch at defenseman Kimmo Timonen after R.J. Umberger's goal sealed the victory on Saturday night.
"The only thing that kind of really disturbs me is that, at the end of the game, Kostopoulos ... to go up and blindside-sucker Kimmo Timonen on a play at the end there ... that’s cowardly, in my opinion," he said. "There’s no place for that. Kimmo's our best player. He's totally unsuspecting. That leaves a bad taste in your mouth."
Stevens later called the move "cheap." Mike Richards added "gutless."
Timonen said he said something about it to Kostopoulos but declined to repeat it.
According to the Associated Press, Montreal coach Guy Carbonneau watched the replay and called the punch a normal reaction to the Flyers' taunting.
"I think he deserved it," Carbonneau said. "That's why they didn't call any (major) penalties on it."
He did not stop there, according to reports in Montreal:
"That (the Flyers) is one team that shouldn't talk. Over 82 games, they had the most suspensions in the league ... After that goal, they were taunting our players. They should have been happy to score and just gone back to the bench. Don't turn around and (needle) our players. I think (Timonen) deserved it."
It figures that this series is going to get nastier.
"It will for sure," said Flyers forward Joffrey Lupul. "I don't know if it will because of that hit, but just the more you play a team the more you really start to dislike them and that kind of comes in every series. Now that we've played them a couple of times and we've gotten to know some of their players, that dislike is really starting to creep in on both teams; you can see it."
Anybody up for some old-time hockey in South Philly, eh?

Wow, they taunted him? Then it should be ok for any player to go crazy, just ask Guy Carboneau.
Let's see how tough Kostopoulos is on the road, but I don't want to see a Flyers player get a 5 minute major or anything. I hope Hatcher knocks him out with a face first check into the glass.
Posted by BobD | April 27, 2008 8:08 PM
I HOPE Downie does to kostopoulos exactly what he did to Mcammond in the pre-season, another suspension and blood on the ice, well worth price of admission.
Posted by clarke | April 27, 2008 9:57 PM
First I want to say that the Canadiesn coach said alot more than that. He said it is funny that John Stevens calls Kostopolus dirty when his team has been the only one suspended two times this year for major amounts of games and along with many others. That we are the dirty ones.
Posted by JOE | April 27, 2008 10:34 PM
The call should have been a match penalty, intent to injure; purely after the play was over - clock stopped...PLUS unsportsmanlike conduct. What do you expect from the "HAGS" with a "Gee" coach? p.s. the refs montreal underwear has been showing the entire series...
Posted by VENGEANCE | April 27, 2008 11:15 PM
It should be fun to watch Kostopoulos find out what "Vengeance Now" means Monday. And Carbonneau gives us all one more reason to dislike French Canadians. Even regular Canadians dislike Queerbec.
Posted by PSUFlyers | April 27, 2008 11:25 PM
To bring up the Flyers early suspensions is completely baseless. Within the first month of the season, every other team in the league had gotten away with dirty hits worse than the Flyers drew suspensions for. When was the last time a player got suspended as a result of a game against the Flyers. There have been numerous high crosschecks, boardings, and other dirty attacks against Flyers this season. No penalties, no suspensions. But when Bergeron turns to intentionally draw a boarding call, Randy Jones gets suspended. Chris Pronger and Chris Simon, both got extended suspensions for slew-footing and leg stomping players, but Maxim Afinogenov got away with the same thing against the Flyers, despite replays clearly showing the stomp. You can't cite penalty numbers when the playing field isn't even.

You what's great? Anyone happen to notice what Guy Carbonneau was wearing during the game on Saturday night? He wore a very dark suit with an orange tie! He could have worn any color in the world - yet he chose a scheme that happens to be the colors of the team he's facing? Coincidence, or have the Flyers seeped into Guy's subconscious already?!
Posted by MEB#16 | April 28, 2008 7:40 AM
You guys are dirty, as are your fans.
Nothing made the NHL happier then your team getting dumped with beer at every turn. Your a bunch of misfits, and Habs in 5.
You will learn tonight how to play hockey. Im sure your fans will leave with 10-15 minutes left in the 3rd.

Tough, old school hockey in Game 2. Gotta love it. You can see the hatred building and it's going to explode at some point.
Now the Flyers have the advantage going back their building tonight.
We'll see in the Habs can tough one out on the road. Personally, I don't see it happening.
I laughed out loud when I read Mike Richards use the word gutless. Two knee-on-knee episodes in as many series and he uses the word "gutless".

Cheap and classless. Just what you would expect from a "tweezer".
Posted by Stips | April 28, 2008 9:40 AM
I find it funny that Canadian Fans write bad things about us Flyers fans. The term "classless"
comes to mind when I heard the fans chanting over our national anthem in game one. Real class, hey. That speaks volumes right there. I hope with all my heart we send you fools to an early vacation. Living in upstate NY I get first-hand a taste of how rude and stupid your people ar capable of being. BTW - If it weren't for the pretty women there would be no reason to visit that ugly city. The food sucks too. Stay on yor side of the border, jerks.

Those suspensions have NOTHING to do with the game that was played on Saturday, and do not justify the constant dirty play by the Canadiens in this series. It's the same terrible excuse from another frustrated coach.
Posted by Anonymous | April 28, 2008 10:09 AM
Its a joke when these guys start talking about everything but the game. I feel like the Caps fans have turned into Habs fans and they are writing all the same sorry stuff...excuses excuses.
Posted by Flyer#9hound | April 28, 2008 10:16 AM
I know for fact Canada doesn't even like montreal or quebec for that matter, they might as well be another country. Why would anyone from canada go there, if you dont speak french they treat you like an outcast.
Posted by clarke | April 28, 2008 11:07 AM
I gotta say The Habs fans really make me wonder if that's the direction we Philly fans want to go. I know we can be loud, opinnionated, rude and somtimes rough. But do we want to be French Canadiens? So make sure when you are dumping beer and spitting on the Habs today, Do it in an American way. =)
Just don't sink to their level and let the national anthem's play. =)

Slapshot-Flyers/Canadiens Remix
Jim Jackson Hi, Jim Jackson again. Kimo, I know that some in our audience don't know the finer points of hockey. Could you tell them, for example, what is icing?
Kimo Timonen: Well, um, icing happen when the puck come down, bang you know, before the other guys you know. Nobody there, you know. The goalie's arm go comes up then the game stop then start up.
Jim Jackson: I see. What is a sucker punch?
Kimo Timonen: Sucker punch when the guy take a cheap swing at you, you know, like what Kostopoulous do and he go like that
[cold cocks Jim Jackson]
Kimo Timonen: you know. You don't do that.
Jim Jackson: You don't do that?
Kimo Timonen: Oh no, never, never.
Jim Jackson Why not?
Kimo Timonen: Against the rules. You know, you're stupid when you do that. Just some French-Canadien pig with no brains, you know.
Jim Jackson: Uh, what is slashing?
Kimo Timonen: Slashing is um, like that
[demonstrates on Jim Jackson]
Kimo Timonen: \\you know.
Jim Jackson: Mm-hmm. And there's a penalty for that?
Kimo Timonen: Yeah and for the trip also, you know like that
[demonstrates]
Kimo Timonen: . And for hook like this
[demonstrates]
Kimo Timonen: . And for spear, you know, like that.
[demonstrates]
Kimo Timonen: You do that, you go to the box, you know. Two minutes, by yourself, you know and you feel shame, you know. The Flyers fans pour beer on you and taunt you. And then you get free.

Doesn't really matter, guys -- as a longtime Philly fan, I am just scared to death over those Pens. Even if we get past Montreal, all it means is worse heartbreak as we get crushed by the overpowering offense of the Penguins!
Posted by GoPhilly | April 28, 2008 11:42 AM

I'm just crazy about hockey and playoff hockey especially. I'm neutral, unbiased, agnostic about who wins this series. I just want to see some good hockey with tons of legal hitting and some high-powered scoring and good goal tending.
All I can say is that Kostopoopolous or whatever his name is better have his head on a swivel tonight!
Maybe Mike Richards can knee him! Seems to be a forte of his.
Posted by Hockey Guy | April 28, 2008 11:51 AM
The Canadiens are "Tweezers" and are the ones I reffered to as classless, rioting after the first round. Damn tweezers. I hope Kostopoulos has his head on a swivel! Go fly guys!
Posted by stips | April 28, 2008 11:51 AM
Canadiens fans / Flyers haters: I would sure hope the Candadiens win this series. They're the number one seed and were picked to win in 5 or 6 by almost every national writer. The Flyers are playing with house money right now. They were the worst team in the whole NHl last year. Now they're 3 wins away from the conference finals. They'll take at least 1 at home and then it will come down to a 3 game series.
Posted by Bob | April 28, 2008 12:05 PM
I HATE MONTREAL EVER SINCE CHELIOS ON PROPP. Hextall got payback then but it was shortlived with the ensuing loss. I want Kostopolus left in a bloody mess on the ice from an illegal Downie elbow up high right in the temple. Knock him completely unconscious so we can poor beer in his wounds and spit on him. I don't care if we're called classless, the whole league is against us either way. LETS GO FLYERS!! and boo their garbage national anthem tonight!! it makes no sense anyway.
Posted by PHILLYPHAN26 | April 28, 2008 12:26 PM

Habs in 5.

Posted by gopens | April 28, 2008 12:38 PM
Of course The flyers were laughing at the Habs. When you spend all game jawing about how you're going to beat us and you lose, we get to say somthing back. I mean c'mon, do you think the Hab's ain't beaking the Flyers too. It's called crow, have a bowl and don't throw a fit.
On a serious note. If any more late hits or cheap shots occurs from any side, I will cite this moment, the moment when an obvious cheap shot AFTER THE PLAY was not enforced or even acknowledged by the NHL officiating or Disciplinary offices. By not doing so they deemed it acceptable behavior. Even if it was a Flyer, I would expect 2 minutes. By not doing so this has become a larger issue and will create a VERY hostile enviorment for both teams. Frankly I'm a little bit worried. I love Hard hitting Old tyme Hockey, but this could threaten careers on both sides. And despite the NHL's belief, we Flyers fans want our opponents bruised, but not broken.
Posted by flyler | April 28, 2008 12:39 PM

Posted by gopens | April 28, 2008 12:41 PM
hey Paul, go sing your dumb national anthem and eat garbage like the french do. FLYERS IN 6!! and if you read my earlier quote, Philadelphia doesn't care what people think about them... we want two things, to win, and blood.. R.I.P. Michael Irvins career...
Posted by PHILLYPHAN26 | April 28, 2008 12:43 PM
I love it. Philly fans bad-mouthing French Canadians and the Cdn anthem. If you feel so strongly about Quebecers...you should boo Daniel Briere and Marty Biron tonight. Where would you be without them...and what about Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Braydon Coburn, Scottie Upshall...the list goes on...all Canadians !!!
Talk smack about the players and team...leave the nationality bashing to the soccer hooligans.

Unfortunately the refs are going to be looking out for a retaliation tonight. They blew the call at least they should acknowledge they did.
Hey "Hockey Guy" now Richards is cheap? He led and hit with his shoulder and his leg was out due to a nice deke by whats-his-face. That is just a natural reaction. Richards even acknowledge it should have been called. You dopes can't even give credit where its due.
My hope is that you are all stockpiling your lighter fluid for the aftermath of loosing this series. Burn down something for me will ya?

Montreal throwing beer on Richards in the penalty box, booing the national anthem, setting fires in their own town, overturning cop cars and sucker punching a player because of some smack talk - please Montreal keep demonstrating to the rest of the world what a high class city you are with your special language and high (drunk) culture -
and the coach - what did he say - score your goal - take your two points and go back to the bench - he's a bit thin skinned, ehh - I guess we aren't allowed to celebrate our goals now either - I can't believe he wusses out and tried to justify a sucker punch on talk - these guys jaw at each other every stoppage of play all season long - what a joke - how pathetic is anyone taking him seriously. And what about spearing our goaltender in the back of the knee or how about the opening face off - Montreal whacking Thorezen in the balls three times hard - before the puck was even dropped - the height of classless behavior. Men do not do that to other men - only punks act like that. Despicable.
Montreal can't hide behind their jersey's - they and their fans are cheap shot artists and completely denigrating the game they say they so dearly love.
Ken Dryden is being awfully quiet these days...Ken speak up buddy the integrity of the game needs you (LOL)hypocrites

Posted by habsYOurbusishere | April 28, 2008 12:58 PM
It was a pure cheap shot. The Caps tried to intentionally injure Timonen and now the Habs are trying to. Someone should go out and two-hand Kovalev in the ankle like Clarkie did to Kharmalov in the good old days. And we can just say he was taunting us. Because according to Gay Carboneau, it's OK to injure someone for taunting.

Posted by Cross Checker | April 28, 2008 1:25 PM
Guy is some how confirming what I have suspected all year - that the Flyers are STILL being penalized for Jones not being suspended longer for the hit on Bergeron.
You can see it in the calls. How many times can Hartnell or Upshall get hit in the head and there is no call, but as soon as the sweater is orange and black with a high hit the arms of the refs almost fly out of joint in making the call.
They need to know this and play it straight.
Posted by what else is new? | April 28, 2008 1:32 PM
The Habs are in a class of their own. The Flyers are what they've always been, overrated, underachieving and quick to fold. The Flyers' greatest years historically paints them as "cheap goons" and those ugly 3 years were put to rest by the great Habs of the seventies. Canadiens are the flagship of the NHL whereas the Flyers are barely a rubber dingy. The Flyers are the dirtiest & cheapest team in professional hockey so it's funny when their ignorant fans and media attempt to speak of "dirty" plays. Philly, stick to sucking in baseball and choking in football, leave the hockey to the pros.

Are all American stupid?
Yes, because you have a stupid President.
Do American know anything about the sport of Hockey?
No, because they suck when it comes to playing hockey.
Do American know the words to the star spangled banner?
No, Americans can't even spell their names right.
Does Philly have a chance in this series? No because the teeam simply sucks and their goalie stinks. They havn't had a good goalie since Pelle Lynburg.

Posted by Cross Checker | April 28, 2008 2:35 PM
Yo Alex - "class of their own" - that's right LOW CLASS - we're watching the games we see you spearing our goalie in the back of the knee and trying to exploit a groin injury - again for the record Men don't act like that - so crawl back under your cheese eating rock and please don't sully us with your pathetic use of our language. Burning cop cars - sorry Alex poser - no high ground there - unless you call that cheap beer you drink a high.
By the way the flagship of the NHL is in Detroit and has been for years - they are the model organization leading point getters and division winners and that my friend is in the USA - is that whimpering I hear...?
By the way part two - Do you know why there are so many Flyer fans in Canada and the Canadian citizens love us and apparently want to play for our organization more than Montreal's - because the Flyers were the last all North American Team to win the Cup, and they run a "Class" organization - ask any player now or retired.
The only way Montreal wins this series is through politics - like that blatant high stick ruling that defied reality in game two or the generous 5 on 3's the refs have been handing out. Don't worry we'll beat you and the refs and whatever league "chosen ones" fit their "marketing" agenda.

Back in the days you were known as the broadstreet bullies, this years team seems more like the broadstreet babies, you guys need a kleenex to wipe the tears running down your cheeks cause you guys complain an awful lot, how could you call the habs a classless organization if you guys are the epitomy of dirty with your dirty hits from behind and having to leave your feet to hit someone...It's too bad your city won't win any type of championship for a while...
Posted by Broadstreet Babies | April 28, 2008 3:32 PM
I agree with the earlier sentiments about not dissing the Frenchie's too much as Briere and Biron are both from that region. Which is why I'm praying Philly shows more class and does not boo or jeer the Canadian National Anthem. Most of our guys are Candaian or Finnish with only 2 Americans. Let's respect them and just spit on the Habs, not their culture. And maybe their fans a bit...

Lord only knows what the Pens would do to us...and if we get past the pens, the Red Wings would crush us.

I call it like I see it and I saw Richards do a knee-on-knee against Ovechkin and against Kovalev.
I don't care what Richards says. What do you expect him to say, "Yup, I tried to ruin 2 careers this playoff season because I don't like Alex Ovechkin and Kovalev".
Of course he denied it. Ask Oveckin and Kovalev their opinions on the matter. I'll bet dollars to donuts they'll both say he's a cheap shot artist.

Story about France
When Ronald Reagan ordered the missise strike on Quaddafi's palace in 1986, the French denied us use of their airspace (the most tactical, logical way into Libya. After successfully completing their mission on the palace, the jet fighters managed to "accidently" level the French embassy in Tripoli on their way out. Whoops, friendly-fire???? hahaha Let's go Flyers!

Your reading comprehension must be 3rd grade level. Either that or it's bona fide mental retardation.
OK, try to keep up. I'll go as slow as I know how.
A hit (dirty or otherwise)is a matter of interpretation. The hitter (in this case Mike Richards) will ALWAYS say it was a good hit. The hittee (in this case Ovechkin and/or Kovalev - take your pick) will SOMETIMES say it was a good hit. However, I'm not going to insult Mike Richards' intelligence (like you did) by saying he would admit the hit was dirty. Richards says it was a trip. I'm sure Ovechkin and Kovalev would say it was dirty.
In short, the mock-quote was a PARODY. Duh!
Nice melt down though. I hope you don't have a job where, ya know, lives are at stake.
Friggin' idiot.

Are you guys really that fucking retarded? Do you think that awful logo on their shirt takes precedence over the maple leaf on their heart? I wish every Flyers fan could fall into the penalty box and have Tie Domi kick the snot out of them one by one. And what a horrible city to boot. Dirty. Poor government. Rampant poverty.
