DRESS-UP FRIDAYS

Don't know what was a bigger surprise to some of us -- that boy-of-the-moment Ashton Kutcher showed up with the rest of the "That '70s Show" cast for a meeting with TV critics this morning, or that he looked so dapper.

Kutcher's been coming to these things since long before he became a Big Movie Guy -- and started dating Demi Moore -- but until now, he's always looked a bit more like Kelso than a guy vying for the best-dressed list (though the hat he wore, its brim pulled so far down it obscured half his face, might disqualify him).

It's not about the sudden fame, apparently. Kutcher, noting that co-stars Danny Masterson and Wilmer Valderrama were also in coats and ties, said that it's just the way they dress on Fridays, when the show's taped.

"It's our way of respecting our crew," he said.

When a reporter pointed out that Topher Grace was both coatless and tieless, a casually dressed Kurtwood Smith, who plays Red, leapt to his defense.

"Topher and I...try to show our respect for the crew by dressing like them," he quipped.

No one asked about Demi -- at least not during the press conference -- but there was plenty of dancing around the issue of what one cast member's stardom can do to an ensemble.

Maybe we were being "Punk'd," but Kutcher, seemed, well, refreshingly un-Suzanne Somers about it all.

"These guys are my family," he said. "I know that if I have a conversation with them, it's between us."

Such things are apparently a luxury in his current life, which he described as "a little different," with "no alone time."

But then, at least so far, he seems willing to not be alone.
