PAPARAZZI, START YOUR ENGINES

Where in the world is Cameron Diaz?

Heck if I know.

Diaz, who appeared before critics Friday via satellite from an undisclosed location, says she's "in the jungle, baby," filming her upcoming MTV series, "Trippin,'" in which she and friends like Drew Barrymore, DMX, Blink 182's Mark Hoppus and Kid Rock explore distant wonders of the world in pursuit of a vaguely -- at least it sounded vague as she described it -- message.

I can live with the vagueness of the message for the moment, but in the pursuit of those journalistic touchstones who, what, where, why and how, I just had to ask Diaz why she couldn't tell us where those bugs who appeared to be feasting on her legs as she spoke hailed from.

She'd already told the first questioner that she was "in the rainforest somewhere on this big beautiful planet," but that's not a location often featured in newspaper datelines (for one thing, it's way too long).

Is there any reason, I asked, why she wouldn't tell us where she was?

"Yeah, because we're trying to keep it so that when we do the show, that we get to do our show and we don't have to deal with any paparazzi or media," she said, noting that they were already dealing with "special local media" (which presumably she's swatting away like so many bugs) "and we're just trying to do our show so that we don't have any interference with that kind of problem...because we want to have a really organic experience and just do our jobs."

Diaz, by the way, is a world-famous actress who claims to hate cameras. Not something you hear from many "reality" TV stars.

Fans of "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego" might have picked up a clue from Diaz' mention of the rainforest and an allusion to the possibility of seeing a jaguar.

I'm going way out on a limb and suggesting South America.

That should keep the paparazzi busy.
