A few fun facts about HBO's "Deadwood":
-- In order to get the pigs to eat the "bodies," they stuff the dummies with corn.
-- To combat the heat -- it was probably well over 100 on the Newhall, Calif., set today -- a few of the heavily costumed actresses resort to such sneaky tactics as "ice packs on the inner thighs," reveals Anna Gunn, who plays Martha Bullock in the gritty Western drama. "I wasn't actually thinking inner thighs," notes Paula Malcolmson, who mentioned a more descriptive name for the ice packs she favors (one that, in a rare show of good taste, I won't repeat here).
-- The Melody Ranch in Newhall, Calif., where most of "Deadwood" is filmed, used to belong to Gene Autry. More than 750 "B" Westerns were made there, as well as some of "Gunsmoke."
-- The crew frequently wets down the dirt in the streets to recreate conditions in the original Deadwood, which often flooded in the 1870s.
