WIND HER UP, WATCH HER GO

To say that Kathy Griffin gives good quote is like saying that Tom Cruise seems a little excitable lately.

Griffin, here in otherwise genteel Beverly Hills to promote her Bravo show, "Kathy Griffin: Life on the D-List," clearly believes that if she can't think of something good to say about someone, her career is safe for a while longer.

So when a reporter asked her this morning what she made of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, she replied, "Oh, thank you."

"OK, first of all, this is what I'm so excited about," she continued. "Now my attorney always says -- because I have an amazing First Amendment attorney because I talk s--- about people all the time -- all right, so anyway, he's like, 'You can say pretty much anything under the umbrella of comedy,' " though he has warned her, she said, about the Scientologists "because they're so litigious."

"So I've been saying they're crazy m------------- for years," but "the beauty of it is...now that Tom Cruise is so crazy," no one's afraid to write about Scientology anymore, she said. "They seem to be insane."

Referring to reports that Scientologists believe in aliens, she said, "Tom Cruise thinks he's from Mars, and I believe him."

As for his new fiancee: "I love the whole free-Katie T-shirts. I love that she's such a dumb ass in interviews."

Moving on then, to the other couple of the moment, Griffin sounded for the most part kinder toward Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, even expressing a certain amount of sympathy for their very public plight.

But the love affair couldn't last.

Of Jolie, she added: "I do think her lips, while beautiful, do sort of look like an inflamed anus."
