BUT DOES IT HAVE TO BE HIM?

Elliott Yamin reveals his love for standards, and his "It Had To Be You" reminds me why his is still my favorite voice in this competition. And I don't know what it is -- maybe that grin -- but he looks adorable.

Randy raves, Paula babbles and Simon thinks the performance "lacked a degree of personality" and reports himself "slightly concerned," which is generally Cowell Code for "I need this person to go home so that someone I'd rather stay doesn't have to."

I wouldn't think, though, that Kellie Pickler is the singer who needs saving tonight, despite the less-than-raves she got from the judges.

Call me crazy, but I think the Kellie contingent's solid -- and that her sweet humility in the face of criticism won't hurt her, either.

On the other hand, this is a show that needs a loser -- and a couple of near-losers -- every Wednesday night.

I don't know what show these judges are watching. I thought Ace stank. Charming? Yeah, if changing the tune is charming. Kellie was not great, but Ace was bad....
