THE PRETTY GOOD AMERICAN SONGBOOK

Katharine McPhee gets the sweet spot tonight, and her "Someone To Watch Over Me" is everything you'd expect, though I'm not sure I agree with Simon that she made everyone else look like "amateurs." (Quick, someone refill his Coke glass.)

Interesting that the best theme nights of "Idol" so far have involved music written long, long before any of the contestants was born.

I'm still waiting, though, for The Moment -- Fantasia singing "Summertime" remaining the gold standard -- that makes me shiver.

Kevin Francis:

Good God, who cares? It's a stupid, juvenile show made by idiots FOR idiots. Not a single person has any recognizable talent, and yes, I include past winner Kelly Clarkson. It's jackass programs like this that have been diluting the music landscape into sappy, disgusting loser "music"; garbage TV for white trash viewers.
