How can such a smartly produced show come up with such lame songs, season after season?

That said, she does as much with it as can probably be done.

Randy channels Paula and tells Kat she looks amazing and then disses the song (yay, Randy).

Paula, channeling Paula, says she was "brilliant."

Simon, while not overtly criticizing the song, practically begs viewers to vote for Kat on the basis of her second.

But since that song would be her first CD, I'd instead consider it a stern warning.
