A NOT UN-'HAPPY HOUR'

I haven't sensed a lot of enthusiasm in the room for Fox's "Happy Hour," a sitcom about a small-town boy (John Sloan) who moves to Chicago to be with his girlfriend (Brooke D'Orsay), gets dumped, fired and ends up with a new roommate (Lex Medlin), described by the network as "a vain, flashy lovable rogue who shows him how to rebuild his life over a round of drinks."

Which could explain why we're asking the actors a lot more questions than we usually do (on most shows, it's the writers who get most of the attention), and that the writers -- married producers Jackie Filgo (a Penn grad) and Jeff Filgo -- are mostly being asked about their relationship.

And oddly enough, it's going well. Or at least no one's yet fallen asleep.

For some reason, two veteran male reporters have decided this is the sesson of the tour where they're going to try to figure out what women want in a guy by questioning the actresses as if they were the characters they play on the show.

Which turns out be funnier than it sounds.

Another male reporter expresses approval for a actress Beth Lacke's portrayal of a woman who eats an entire pizza in one sitting, something you don't normally see from actresses on a Fox show, who, as he points out, generally aren't seen eating at all. (And don't think we won't miss watching "The O.C.'s" Mischa Barton push bits of food around a plate.)

"First off, there was an intense training period, because I don't usually eat," Lacke joked. "I'm done for at least a year."

Sloan, meanwhile, is asked whether a couple of jokes that imply he's short were added after he was cast. He seems mildy puzzled, and the reporter finally demands to know his "actual height."

"I'm 5-9," he replies, surprising the not-exactly-NBA-height questioner, who remarks, "That's not even short."

The session isn't, though, and when the almost-inevitable lull finally occurs, one of the actors, no doubt briefed that they'd be facing a roomful of people who are now in their third week of press conferences, asked sympathetically if we'd be going home soon.

A few minutes later, an equally sympathetic Fox PR person cuts the session short, but not before one of the actresses -- Jamie Denbo, I think -- offered to strip.
