It's not everyone who can upstage William H. Macy, but then it's not every day Macy shares a dais with a guy who does dog impressions.
PBS is here today, a two-day caboose on the long, long train of TCA's summer press tour, and the day began with "Curious George," a series spinoff of the Universal Studios animated movie that Macy will be narrating.
So while some of us finished up our breakfast -- somehow everything on my plate was as yellow as the "George"-themed tablecloth, as if I'd been subjected to some sort of subliminal advertising while going through the buffet line -- we were entertained by voice artist Frank Welker, who is the voice of George.
Who, thanks to the will of author Margret Rey, will never, ever talk. Not even on PBS, which is not only picking and choosing among George's sometimes un-PC adventures (he won't be experimenting with smoking, for instance) but plans to use the little monkey to introduce concepts in math, science and engineering.
Welker, whose voice you've heard more often than you can imagine, from "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (he's Max) to "The Simpsons," has an impressive repertoire of dog sounds, imitating a Beverly Hills watchdog, an old dog, a dog out on a walk and, somewhat loudly, a dog encountering a cat.
Wish you could've been here.
