This just in from NBC (and, probably not coincidentally, in the middle of ABC's first day here at TCA): Spike Lee's signed to develop a new drama series for the Peacock.
"Details of the untitled drama's concept will be announced later," says NBC.
Sure, plenty of time for that. Today's it's enough to throw out a big name while ABC's spending two days trying to introduce a couple of hundred writers to 10 or more new shows.
Games like that continue even as ABC honcho Steve McPherson insists he and his counterparts are CBS, NBC, Fox and the CW are all good friends. (He went mountain biking with Fox's Peter Liguori on Sunday, and he and NBC's Kevin Reilly are longtime buds.)
Taking pot shots at the competition -- a press tour sport from way back, though one that's waned with the promotions of CBS' Les Moonves and NBC's Jeff Zucker -- doesn't seem to interest McPherson.
"We spend too much time in this broadcast business beating up on other broadcast businesses," he said. "It really is just an ego...contest," he added. "We don't sell first, second, third or fourth" place, they sell advertisers on the size and makeup of the audiences for particular shows.
So we couldn't even get a rise out of McPherson over CBS' Nina Tassler trying to describe her powerhouse "CSI" as the "underdog" against ABC's "Grey's Anatomy."
"I heard Nina was playing the rope-a-dope," McPherson said genially. "It's kind of funny."
Oh, and for the record, he thinks "Grey's" is the underdog.
Let the games begin.
