IF SIMON COULD SEE HER NOW

Two years ago, I covered the Golden Globes in person -- dressed formally, as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association requires -- and I'm glad I did, if only to discover just how unglamorous such a glamorous a gig really is.

(Imagine toting a laptop around an HBO after-party packed with stars and you'll see what I mean.)

This year, I'm holed up at the Ritz Carlton in Pasadena, watching a closed-circuit feed, courtesty of NBC, of the live-on-the-East Coast feed (it's only a bit after 5 p.m. here).

Wearing far more comfortable clothes.

And we're off -- with "American Idol" castoff Jennifer Hudson winning a Globe for best supporting actress in a motion picture.

"I have always dreamed, but never this big," says a tearful Hudson, striking just the right note.
