Look for a new look, a new marketing campaign and a new host from PBS' "Masterpiece Theatre" when it returns in January with "The Complete Jane Austen," a season of Austen-mania that will include some new versions of some of Austen's six novels as well as reruns of the others (no, girls, they're not trashing the Colin Firth version of "Pride and Prejudice").
New host?
Not chosen yet, says exec producer Rebecca Eaton.
"Choosing a host is harder than choosing a husband or a wife. The stakes are higher, I think," claims Eaton, sounding very un-Austen-like.
On the other hand, Austen never married, while Eaton says an ex-girlfriend of her own husband is among the many, many people who've volunteered to host.
By the way, to give you an idea of what most networks think of TV critics, we've already been warned not to fight over the Jane Austen action figures -- still in their original packaging! -- that form the centerpiece of our breakfast tables this morning.
Apparently we're each getting one of our very own.
But though I yield to no one in my love for All Things Austen, I' think I'm holding out for a Mr. Darcy doll.

Are they going to sell these action figures, too? I need one! I need the whole set!

Hey, I post under the name Ellen, too, so this just makes it look as if I'm talking to myself (which I am, but not here).
Don't know what the plans are for the action figures, but it's PBS, so you know it's going to be hawked somewhere, somehow. Maybe they'll use them during pledge breaks...
