PBS' OTHER WORDGIRL

Carol Burnett, who's getting the "American Masters" treatment for PBS, and is here to talk about it, confesses to being "a nut for crosswords."

And not, I'm happy to say, the TV Guide variety (where she could easily be a clue).

No, the real ones. And like all New York Times addicts, she rates herself by the days of the week (they get harder as the week goes along, but then, what doesn't?).

"I can get through Wednesday and part of Thursday," she says.

Oh, and I don't know if Lindsay Lohan's ears are ringing (or whether they always do), but Burnett just mentioned that she considers Lohan -- who probably doesn't work many crosswords -- "a major talent."

And that her "heart goes out to her."
