Debating without baiting

Here's a Daily News op-ed worth checking out today.

I have always felt that it is not just what you say, but how you say it that is important. I agree that it would be great for Presidential candidates to read these "10 ways to poison a debate," as civil discourse is greatly needed.

One of the main reasons I have supported Obama's campaign is because I respect the way he has run his campaign. I do think that all of us could stand to read this piece as well. We may not be taking part in debates on TV and conversations that impact the world, but we debate with our family, spouses, friends, neighbors, and colleagues daily. It is important to remind ourselves how important it is to seek to understand before being understood.

Fit-izen hunters?

Staying fit and healthy is part of being a citizenhunter, as I have mentioned before. It's important to avoid health complications that are a drain not just on you and your family, but also on taxpayers.

Now there's another reason to stay fit, so you can live longer and do citizenhunter activities for even more time. Though it is somewhat common-sense, a new study by the University of Toronto gives scientific proof to what you may have guessed: that the aging process can be slowed by working out regularly. If we exercise daily, the study shows that we can increase our aerobic power by a quarter in terms of fitness, making us up to a decade younger! Who doesn't want that? That is about as close to a fountain of youth that one will find.

Remember that drinking and smoking are also no-no's, especially in excess.

Exercising also boosts your immune system, gives you better recovery time when you get injured. And better balance -- I mean literally, not figuratively, but that probably applies as well. Your body learns to take in more oxygen from exercising, which makes breathing easier! Now all we have to do is get our air cleaner so that that is even more fun. You can always check out my colleague Kimberly Garrison's columns and podcast for the latest fitness tips.

UPDATE Check out this mini-editorial on a fitness-related cause you can help out with, whether or not you're actually running on Sunday.

The Wright Stuff

Glad I can still count on one of my colleagues not to be a lemming or stenographer like most of those in the media, but in fact report on a perspective that is not being adequately addressed by reporters and talking heads.

John Baer is correct in stating what should be obvious, that voters in Pennsylvania and across the country have more serious, relevant and pressing problems than what Obama's former pastor said in 30 seconds of a 30-year career.

The news media should help clarify and communicate to the American public the issues that really affect our lives. They should also, in the spirit of Watergate, be using what are increasingly small resources to hold our goverment's feet to the fire and uncover fraud, waste and deception in the halls of power. The Washington Post series on Walter Reed was a great example of how reporters can shed light on important issues, like our American heroes not being treated in a way that they most surely deserve. That brought veterans' health care and our returning injured to the front pages and the consciousness of our leaders and public where it should have always been.

This Rev. Wright story was a legitimate one for two days; with the serious problems our nation and this world face, those who continue to elevate its importance should hang their heads in shame.

TIME FOR A NEW G.I. BILL

ANOTHER VIEW OF EDUCATIONAL CRISIS, AND A FIX

Here's our editorial for today's Daily News. I don't need to tell you Citizen Hunters how important the veterans issue is to me. Just read it and if you agree feel free to let your congressional representatives know.

THE GRIM NEWS of the city's high dropout rate (45 percent) and low numbers of people with college degrees (18 percent) is even grimmer considering we're seeing a similar troubling trend in the military.
The National Priorities Project, a research group that analyzes federal data, found that only 71 percent of Army recruits had earned regular high-school diplomas, about 20 percentage points away from its target of 90 percent.

This has far-reaching implications on the battlefields and the homefront, but there is one silver lining: Congress can use it to spur positive action by adapting a 21st-century version of the G.I. Bill.

The G.I. Bill - the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 - was designed to help veterans assimilate into civilian life, with tuition assistance, low-cost housing loans, and unemployment benefits.

Sadly, the G.I. Bill has been left to decompose, not updated or adjusted to deliver the same promise to our newest veterans.

  • Teaching Your Kids to Lie

It's a long article in New York Magazine, but a fascinating read and well worth it. The piece is an in-depth look at research done on what kids lie about, why they lie, and how best to stop them.

I found it interesting that children can often start lying as early as two. Some tell parents to just ignore the lies, that they will grow out of it; turns out the research shows just the opposite - they grow into it. It also showed that kids witness so many white lies and were asked to tell so many white lies that deception really became a daily activity. There were a lot of helpful ideas based on the research for how to address the issue.

The article was jam-packed with great information, but the one piece of research that stuck out the most for me was a test where the child had done something the experimenter asked them not to do--67% of the kids disobeyed and of those, 98% of them lied about doing it. But here's the interesting part, with the same situation presented the child was read either the Boy Who Cried Wolf or George Washington and the Cherry Tree (both stories that deal with the issue of lying and their ramifications) before they were asked if they had disobeyed. After hearing the moral of the story fewer children lied, but you might be surprised which story worked better. The George Washington one was far more effective--the moral of that is that it is important to teach your children about the benefits and importance of honesty, not just tell them that lying is wrong.

Hope you'll check out the piece, I can't do it justice. Just remember that our kids grow up to be tomorrow's politicians, CEO's and so on and the consequences of lying only increase with age, not just for the person who tells the lie, but for society as a whole. Being a good Citizenhunter means voting and making a difference in your community, but it also means strong families. I started the Work at Home Mom Section because, though I am not a mother myself, I have 5 younger siblings and I think there is no greater service to the world than rearing children who are CitizenHunters in training to leave this world better than they came into it.

    WHAT YOU SAID

Come on America, wise up already. Now that we know about all the money Bill/Hillary has earned from different sources, doesn't that tell you that Bill Clinton has already sold out the white house. Why do you think he is so adamant about getting Hillary back in? He's promised a lot of people favors once they return to the white house. We only know about the Columbians and now the Canadians. Who else is waiting in the wings to cash in on a Hillary presidency.

The Clintons care only about themselves. They will get back in the white house with more scandals than a hustler magazine. Do we really want to go through all the scandalous behavior of Bill Clinton? And for Governor Edward G. Rendell, it is rumored that if Hillary gets back in the White house, she will appoint Midge Rendell, who is now a Eastern District Judge, to a spot on the Supreme Court. Obama is right when he says that we need to change the way in which we operate our goverment. To have Hillary Clinton back in the white house would be giving approval to more shakey deals that Bill Clinton has made and promised.

Wake up America. We won't get another chance like this with a person like Obama for another 40 years. Think about your children and grandchildren. Don't you want them to grow up in a world that is better than the one we had? Keep the Clintons out of the white house. Not this time!
