Pennsylvania already has a law that denies civil marriages for same sex couples. This attempt to write discrimination into our constitution is completely unnecessary and it seeks to exploit fears to be used for political gain.
It takes time and energy away from things I believe to be more important to Pennsylvanians. Things like property tax reform, raising the minimum wage, education and health care.

Pennsylvania should be lucky that this issue is only presenting itself through legislation. In states like Michigan, Maryland and other referendum states, the radical right has used and are preparing to use this issue as a way to drive a wedge between political candidates and drive out their conservative base.
The process for having an issue appear on the ballot as an initiatve measure takes longer than some of these other states so the conservatives are trying to do it the old fasion way. Trust me, you will see this issue raised in the fall elections as the right-wing tracks how certain members voted.
Could we please not let Pennsylvania end up like Kansas and their Fred Phelps homophobes?

Everyone should be treated equally. Period.

Aren't constitutions supposed to ensure our rights, not take them away? When we are faced with inadequate health insurance for our citizens, unqualified teachers for our children, inadequate drug abuse treatment, and major environmental problems, I'm just happy our legislature is working hard on a gay marriage amendment. If these guys (and gals) were on Gilligan's Island, they would be more interested in hut assignments than fixing the hole in the boat.

Hopefully, this shameful exercise will backfire like "intelligent design" did last year. At some point, the voters will wake up and realize that these hot-button social issues are distracting us from solving more critical problems with the economy, health care and education. And like Dover, PA, maybe they will replace their elected officials who choose divisiveness over the common good.
