I wanted this Daily News editorial from Monday to be the beginning. I have to wait for my day off before I write a real blog entry on the Governor as I could go on forever. I will spare you guys a book-length post and will instead sift through which accomplishments I am most proud of, both as someone who worked for him and as a Pennsylvanian.
One thing that comes to mind, though I seldom here it spoken of in PA, is that when I travel the country, I hear many of those who watch politics closely referring to him as one of the strongest environmental leaders in office. I concur - why does no one in PA know about it?

Yeah, that zillion dollar tax abatement he got for his Comcast friends to build an unneeded office tower will pay to recycle urine.

Governor Ed Rendell has done more for Pennsylvania, and the nation, than any governor in our history. His emphasis on replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources is going to help America become Independent of imported oil. It is going to help our economy grow and provide countless jobs for Pennsylvanians. From the plant in Clearfield county to the investments in making the state cars run on alternative fuels, its only going to get better. Too bad there are term limits for governor, and we only have Rendell for four more years.

I work for a major manufacturer who decide not to locate a facility in PA simply because the environmental permitting process is an excruciating bad joke, and, unlike practically every other state, the government in PA offers basically no help in navigating the red tape. The personal and business tax rates and structure don't help either. So, if Rendell's plan to save the Pennsylvania environment is to force manufacturers to states like Tennessee or Texas where the taxes are more reasonable and the enviro regulations are actually clear, I guess he's a rousing success. Maybe the people of PA, especially those who lose manufacturing jobs in Central PA, should be informed about the general enviroment-over-jobs attitude of the administration. I'm not betting on it.
I will add that the skill level of PA workers is not exactly stellar, and, again, the state is absolutely zero help in providing any assistance for training or even lobbying for Federal help with same. Unless, of course, you're opening a coal-to-diesel fuel plant, in which case you get PA taxpayer's money in a paper sack for whatever the hell you want.
I won't even start on his pay for football commentary on Comcast. If they give him pay, which they do, when he gives it to a charity he still gets a substantial tax credit. He accrues more post-tax dollars because of this shell game with Comcast, and his basic reaction is, "Because I disclosed this obvious conflict of interest, I don't see the problem." The state government makes decisions on regulation that impact Comcast on a practically daily basis, and I won't even get started on the horrible tower that will just jack up the vacancy rates on all the other office space in Philadelphia. What an ethical, great guy this Rendell is. Watch for four more years of PA government as the most corrupt in the country thanks to the Republican hicks in the sticks and good old Fast Eddie, the fat dude from New York.
