Spend money to save lives

Here is a guest blog from Pat Halpin-Murphy, President, Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition.

Sometimes it is difficult to remember what all the initials stand for, but everyone knows instantly what the words "breast cancer" mean. So when STELLAR, or the Study to Evaluate Letrozole and Raloxifene, is threatened with cancellation, the NSABP, or National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, sounds the alarm.

The NSABP P-4 prevention trial is the logical step in a series of research studies which have helped reduce the incidence of breast cancer among high risk women by 50%. Only as of now, the National Cancer Institute will not release the $13 million in funding which had previously been approved.

We are talking about spending a few million dollars to SAVE lives, compared to the billions of dollars being spent elsewhere to take lives. If we have the chance to prove that certain drugs can reduce the occurrence of breast cancer by more than 70%, isn't this worth the price?

Please - help us by writing your senators and congressional representatives and ask them to ensure that the funding remains for this important trial.

I already did. I think this was a very informativ article. I like that the Philly Paper does this, and goes the extra mile to help.
