Here's a guest blog from Nathan Dorfman, who is 16 years old.
Many of us are aware of our situation in Iraq. While thinking about the situation, we may wonder how we can show our soldiers that we care. We may also wonder how we can actually help them. Fortunately, we can do both by supporting the Silly String Fund. For simply put, Silly String saves soldiers' lives by enabling soldiers to accurately detect trip-wires. Here is how Silly String works: If a soldier sprays Silly String in a room and the string falls to the floor, the soldier knows his surroundings are safe. However, if the string hangs in mid-air, the soldier knows that bomb-containing trip-wires lurk nearby.
During the past three months, I have been conducting a Silly String Fund at Central High School, in Philadelphia, PA. So far, over $1,000 has been raised. All of the proceeds are being sent to Mrs. Marcelle Shriver, a South Jersey mother, whose son, Todd, is currently serving overseas. Mrs. Shriver, who coordinates the Silly String Fund nationally, will purchase the string and then send it to a private pilot, who will deliver the supply to our troops. Mrs. Shriver and I hope, that one day, every soldier will be equipped with cans of Silly String.
The Silly String Fund's success at Central never ceases to amaze me. Recently, I have been so moved by the altruism and the patriotism shown by both students and faculty. Gratitude is also sent to Dr. Pavel, the president of Central, and Mr. Barthelmeh, (my class sponsor), for allowing the fund to be conducted. Special thanks also go out to all Central High students, especially those of the 268th class, for their unwavering support.
All in all, donating to the Silly String Fund is a remarkable way in which all Americans can help protect the troops, since whether we realize it or not, what we do on the home-front has more impact than we realize. Because, after all, we can make a difference!
Silly String Fund Donations can be sent in money-order form before June 19th to:

Philadelphia, PA 19141

Nathan, you did more to support the troops in one season than most people do in a lifetime - all they do is complain. thanks little buddy!

While I think it that it is amazing that Nathan Dorfman is undertaking this effort to help our troops, I think that the US Government SHOULD be supplying our troops with the proper tools to defend themselves, even if it is Silly String. Many thanks to Nathan and others who do what they can to help make the lives of our troops easier.
