Penn Environment, one of our favorite groups, comes through with another important action item for all Citizen Hunters:
- Do you know the toxic dumpsites near your community that could see cleanups slowed down or stopped if the Pennsylvania legislature doesn't reauthorize the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Fund?
Check out some of the toxic sites whose cleanup may be threatened.
We are almost to our goal of more than 1,000 emails to Pennsylvania's state
senators asking them to reauthorize Pennsylvania's Hazardous Sites Cleanup Fund
with long-term, dedicated and sustainable funding. Help us hit our goal by clicking on this link.
- BACKGROUND
Pennsylvania's extensive industrial history has left a legacy of toxic pollution
that threatens our environment and public health. This includes more than 1,000
abandoned hazardous waste sites found across the state. These sites scar our
landscape, drag down our local economies, endanger the health of local
communities and threaten our environment.
That's because many of the pollutants found at these toxic dumpsites are known
to cause cancer, birth defects or other health problems. Unfortunately, until
these hazardous waste sites are cleaned up the toxic chemicals will continue to
leach into our soil and groundwater, and evaporate into the air and into our
environment.
To find toxic dumpsites in your community that could lose cleanup funding, click
here.
Pennsylvania's Hazardous Sites Cleanup Fund has been the state's primary method
for cleaning up these dumpsites -- and it has been hugely successful. To date,
the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Fund has been able to clean up hundreds of
contaminated dumpsites and create and/or retained thousands of jobs.
Unfortunately, the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Fund is running out of funding. If
our politicians in Harrisburg don't reauthorize this program soon, the funding
necessary to clean up toxic pollution will dry up and force cleanup efforts to
slow down--or worse yet come to a complete standstill.
Ask your state senator to reauthorize the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Fund. Then ask
your friends and family to help by forwarding them this email.
