Glad I can still count on one of my colleagues not to be a lemming or stenographer like most of those in the media, but in fact report on a perspective that is not being adequately addressed by reporters and talking heads.
John Baer is correct in stating what should be obvious, that voters in Pennsylvania and across the country have more serious, relevant and pressing problems than what Obama's former pastor said in 30 seconds of a 30-year career.
The news media should help clarify and communicate to the American public the issues that really affect our lives. They should also, in the spirit of Watergate, be using what are increasingly small resources to hold our goverment's feet to the fire and uncover fraud, waste and deception in the halls of power. The Washington Post series on Walter Reed was a great example of how reporters can shed light on important issues, like our American heroes not being treated in a way that they most surely deserve. That brought veterans' health care and our returning injured to the front pages and the consciousness of our leaders and public where it should have always been.
This Rev. Wright story was a legitimate one for two days; with the serious problems our nation and this world face, those who continue to elevate its importance should hang their heads in shame.

You have got to be kidding me! It's people like you and Keith Olbermann who are going to get John McCain elected in November. I used to think Obama would win the popular vote and lose the electoral college, but now, I would expect him to lose both. I do not want my daughter to live in a country governed by John McCain. The only answer the mess the Obama-loving media has inflicted on the country is a Clinton/Obama ticket.

Flavia,
I never heard of you until tonight...Larry King. You hit it dead on the head!!! People are suffering economically. Enough with the Wright story. As an African American, I am offended that the media is making this such a big deal and feel that this is an Obama beat-up-bash. The media needs to know that African Americans and those truly support Obama will support him in November. You are right, if we ( African Americans) feel that the Obama was unfairly treated because of this media bashing, then no, many of us will not support Hillary...I know that I won't. I am to the point where I ready to start a petition to boycott CNN. Every news reporter/anchor is talking about the same thing. Cooper, Brown, Sanchez, all are reporting the same thing. Enough is enough! Let's talk about what really matters... the economy and how it is affecting the lives of Americans.
Posted by: Cara on April 28, 2008 22:04
What really matters, Cara, is that John McCain is defeated in November, and Barack Obama is NOT going to do that.
Posted by: Lynn on April 28, 2008 22:05
Flavia....If Obama does not have the fortitude and moral fiber to loudly denouce yet MORE of the nonsense of Reverend Wright, then he should not be President of the United States. We want a President who has the emotional intelligence to be Commander-in-Chief.
This emotional intelligence sort of reminds me of driving a certain campaign functionary to a Saturday political party rally in Reading in 1998. On the way out from Philadelphia, and the way back, this campaign functionary saw signs from the opposing candidate for State Treasurer on the side of the road and asked what would happen if we pulled them up and threw them away,
As I said at that time to the functionary in my car, OUR candidate did not conduct business that way. I knew OUR candidate over many years---well before the functionary---and OUR candidate did things the right way.
Flavia....do you remember OUR candidate???
PS.....Your screeching on Larry King Live was so unbecoming of your capabilities. You make Ann Coulter look tolerable!
Posted by: Hank Kearney on April 28, 2008 23:23
Yes, McCain must be stopped...however what really matters, Lynn, are the American people. Clinton can't do it either without the support of ALL Democrats. As long as the media play upon words and continue unecessary dialogue about things that don't matter, and as long as Hillary continues to throw unecessary negative comments about Obama, the African American vote (which is pivotal to the survival of the Democrats)will be hindered.
After all, Clinton said herself, perhaps not in these exact words, that she is qualified and she knows McCain is qualified...in other words, a vote for McCain is better than a vote for a member of her own party. If indeed it is the desire that John McCain is defeated, then Clinton along with the media is making it very difficult come November that either canandate to win against McCain.

I'm against secret prisons, invading countries that did not attack us, demonizing an entire religion, torturing those captured who fought not to be occupied.
Being Anti-American sounds like being Anti-Nazi.
When American's realize Bush will be judged as America's Hitler then maybe he can be brought to true justice.

I thought I was the only one who was talking sense and truth until I saw you on cnn tonite. U have to see the idiots on facebook. They actually have a post board called "NOBAMA". And I've been looking at not only the inane remarks they make, but the inane proof they use to support it.
They have a long list of issues that I dont belief is true. If there is a way to get that post board outta there (hopefully for intentional conspiring to undermine) please so us all a favor.
Whats the worse of all this is that people agree with the un-supported non-evident claims.
Hey again, I like your way of thinking because it's all true.

saw you on Larry King tonight, you're always a breath of fresh air compared to most of the talking heads.... hadn't seen you on the cable shows lately.... but then again, these MSNBC shows seem to be dropping like flies, eg: Scarborough Country and The Situation... trade Tucker for Abrams and send Joe to the morning.
It's great that you're supporting Obama, I love him. Went to a rally in the Meadowlands (even though I was supposed to go a McCain rally in Trenton that same morning.... yes I'm an Independent!) and got to see a 'lil bit lil bit' of Deniro and Caroline Kennedy. Your gov (rendel) has been a bit tough on Barack... but Barack seems to let it all slide off his back... he is so darn cool and almost a bit Jesus-like... no blasphemy intended but Jesus always seemed to be able to take hostile words or trick questions and turn them into thought-provoking questions that left the mob scratching their heads (notice Hannity scratching more?... lol).
His speech on race was incredible... I thought it was very Lincoln-esque (even though there isnt much video of Lincoln speaking... harhar)... Jefferson is my favorite prez, but the more I learn about Lincoln the more I am endeared to him... the history of the Gettysburg address blows me away ... they relegated Lincoln to the end of the program and gave him 3 minutes to speak and those 272 words lived on and the rest forgotten.... amazing!
So you have a degree in religion... that was an interesting surprise... I guess I expect most democratic strategists to be lawyers or have majored in politcal science. What made you decide to follow that course of study? Was there a possibility that big sister Flavia was looking into becoming Head Sister Flavia??lol I joke, but I have a cousin who is a nun.... from the Pennsylvania side of the family (my grandfather helped build a small town just outside Scranton)... I grew up in NYC.
Well, thanks for the opportunity to write to you. I will definitely check out Miracle Quest and Citizen Hunter and look for your next cable news appearance. Take care and hope you are well in your travels.
sincerely,
Victor S. Manganaro =)

Yea, Flav, you sound like a Clinton supporter circa the Monica Era... who cares what a man does in private with a consenting woman? Isn't that just between him, the wife, and the mistress? It couldn't POSSIBLY be an indication of the man's poor judgment, his ethics, or his uncanny ability to lie to the American public.... could it? And, yes, I believe Prez Clinton Part 1 could/should have been a GREAT commander and chief, historically speaking, and was NOT due to his unbelievably poor judgment.
I therefore believe Obama has and is making errors in judgment and extremely bad decisions regarding personal associations that belie and undermine his charm, intelligence, and aspirations. It is absolutely fair for the media (and me/us) to focus the beam on this issue for a little longer. What else may lie under these covers? What else don't I/we know about this person? Who else is waiting to spring out at us? His response in Philly was weak and really shed no light on any of this, and in some ways condescending to those of us who, believe it or not, already understand the quiet racial divide in this country.
Obama supporters, like yourself, would be expected to give this issue the quickest brush possible... the rest of us, not so much.
Posted by: skipintro on April 29, 2008 13:33
Great job on Larry King! Let's start talking about the real issues. No matter how much Sean Hannity, et. al. want to run against the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Brack Obama is the candidate for President of the United States. Consevatives don't want to talk about issues, but we've seen this playbook before. They want to run away from the issues.
4000 American lives lost and 30,000 Americans injured in a war of "choice," gas prices rising from $1.41 a gallon to $3.60 a gallon, a $2500 loss in real median household income, 47 million Americans or 16 percent of the population without health insurnce, 12,000 jobs "outsourced" every month, a 20 percent increase in carbon dioxide levels are the legacy of seven years of Republican control of the White House. So can you really blame the conservatives when they want to run against the incendiary remarks of Reverend Wright rather than run on their record?

For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. For ye, brethren, became followers of the churches of God which in Judaea are in Christ Jesus: for ye also have suffered like things of your own countrymen, even as they have of the Jews: Who both killed the Lord Jesus, and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they please not God, and are contrary to all men:

I'm just a hedge fund manager from new york living in los angeles so I don't pretend to "get" the political game, but it's intriguing.
Being a big supporter of Obama, as I know you are as well, I just wonder why I've never heard him, nor any of his surrogates say what I'm sure was meant from that "Bitter" San Francisco speech:
Guns, religion, culture and tradition are most certainly not used/practiced "only" in times of frustration or bitterness.
But they are most definitely "also" used/practiced in times of frustration and bitterness.
Many Americans are frustrated and bitter.

I'm appalled at your statements backing Father Pfleger, it is deplorable! How you can profess to be so proud of your faith and then to turn around and show respect for a nut case like this priest is beyond my comprehension.
To take his side and the side of Rev. Wright and Farrakhan is beyond all logic! You need to stick with CNN or MSNBC where your leftist view will be appreciated.

Having recently become a political junkie, I am just now becoming more familiar with your presence on the various news shows. If the TV is on, and I hear your voice, I now find myself stopping whatever I'm doing to listen to your insight.
I am not a 'typical' Obama supporter; I live in a very conservative collar county of Chicago; I'm a white, 48 year-old, married female with two daughters in college, and I work part-time as a chaplain with a hospice agency. The seminary I attended (just graduated two years ago) is not far from Trinity UCC, and I know people who attend it. It pains me to see this church become the victim of such hatred and misinformation.
I'd just like to say thank you for expressing views that represent people like myself. My undergraduate degree was in journalism, and I've become so disheartened by the media's portrayal of this election cycle. I wish you luck in your continued journey to report what is fair in this election.

I recently viewed you on Larry King. I wanted to know, why do you hate Hillary Clinton so much. You seem very upset with her. You also seem very hostile and unhappy in general.
I understand that you are really routing for Barack to win the election. As an African American, I do not support Barack. I feel that it is important to know someones character and what they really intend to do when they get in the White House. Several people close to Barack have stated that Barack is not telling the truth on what he will actually do in the White House. His Rev. Wright of 20 years states that he is saying what he needs to get elected and Barack agrees with his comments. Two of his top advisors stated that he will not do what he says on NAFTA and pulling troops out of Iraq. Barack has also made comments that I feel belittle other ethnic groups. As president, you should be for all ethnic groups.
I hope that you become a more happier person!!!! People are entitled to their opinion in this country. That's why I live here.

What does this say about Hillary's character. You talk about what " other people say" about Obama not being honest about. Guess what? Others's don't need to say anthing about Hillary and her lack of honesty...she has done it herself.

And Lannie- I never like him anymore, he is such an attack dog. I can almost feel his foul breath, sorry to say. You were getting to him, because he jumped on you at the end. Saw you on Larry King tonight. Thought you made some very good points. Especially, the fact that he didn't do the typically political thing which would have been just throwing Wright under the bus from the start. That would have been the easy thing to do. Also, didn't know about the Methodist Church doctrine with regard to gays. Interesting. Anyway, hope you're doing well. Are you still in LA or back in Philly?
Posted by: Aaron on April 30, 2008 01:50
I saw you on Larry King tonight saying that Hillary Clinton should have read some intelligence report on Iraq before voting to allow the President to use force.
My view is that Hillary voted in line with her constituancy in New York which is largely Jewish, and considered Iraq to be an enemy of Israel at that time. So I think her vote is justified by her representing her voters in the Senate, which is what she is elected to do.
It's not a mistake in judgement to vote as your constituancy would expect.
What is a mistake in judgement is to use drugs, not attend to a dying mother, and to throw your pastor under the bus. And I might point out that it's a mistake in judgement to support Barack Obama for President.
Consider that these "minor distractions" are going to become many 30 second TV ads in October and result in Obama's defeat. If Obama would accept the VP nomination then all these "minor distractions" become moot
Posted by: on April 30, 2008 02:04
I am writing in response to the individual (you did not write in a name with your post) who believes that supporting Obama for president is a mistake. None of the examples you have cited are an indication of how Obama will do as President of the United States. Obama wants to help us get health care, bring back jobs that have been lost, secure our boarders, strengthen our national security, and do a number of other things to improve our country. In my view, the real mistake in judgement would be to continue to pay attention to irrelevant factors (like the one's you have cited). The American people need to focus on the real issues, as opposed to being influenced by irrelevant factors.
Posted by: Kev on April 30, 2008 09:47
Most people don't actually see or realize the true underlying problem when it comes to not only the wright issue(non-issue)or racial problems as well as problems between people in general. As human beings there is an innate tendency for us to look at what people say and do through our own personal frame of reference. Herein lies the problem, whenever we deal with people in any fashion or form we must always remember that what they say, what they do, and to a great extent who they are is shaped by their personal frame of reference which is shaped by their personal life experiences. Take the poor women in Texas if you are a third or fourth generation product of polygamy. Then your frame of reference your world view is skewed from what the majority of society views as the norm.
As highly educated as Pastor Wright is he is still probably influenced to a great degree from the negative experiences that he faced growing up in
America during the period and time he did. No doubt even being a man of God there is probably past pain and injustice that he has personally not
healed from. His past no doubt clouds his view of not only the present but the future.
If America as a nation of diversity is ever to thrive and grow. We must embrace our differences.
We must allow our individual differences and views
to mess together and not separate. It takes a selfless person to hear harmful even hurtful words come from an individual and instead of retaliating
show that person some love.
Someone needs to tell Rev Wright that its going to be alright the social ills of this country's past while not totally eradicated are slowly fading away. With the candidacy of his member we are on the verge of a new day in this country where the potential of the dream of the late Dr. Martin Luther King may finally be realized. Someone needs to put their arm around his shoulder and say its okay the past is just that the past. If we all pull together the future is bright.
It is time for the name calling and mud slinging to end enough is enough there is too much work to be done. All of this he said she said is not putting food on anyone's table or helping bring down the price of gas. It is also time for the news media to grow-up the constant reporting of negative comments does no one any good. They are just as much to blame for reporting it as those who say it. Our country is facing some of its most
serious problems since its inception. This negative reporting serves no valid purpose other then to boost viewership and ratings.
Posted by: Mike on April 30, 2008 11:21
Mike, I agree with almost all of what you said. However, I think that one of the problems that you described (the one about people looking through their own personal frame of reference) is one that can not be conquered very easily. I think that what is happening between Rev. Wright and Senator Obama illustrates a fundamental disagreement between generations. (I know that to some degree this is a gross oversimplification but please here me out) Many older African Americans (like Rev. Wright) still subscribe to the notion that in order to achieve justice in this society, it is necessary to struggle against the so called "establishment". The "establishment" generally includes the government and other powerful entities. I think that a fundamental flaw in their logic is that they fail to recognize the progress that has been made over the last 40 years. Due to the progress that has been made, in my view, there are many people in the United States who believe strongly in fighting for social justice and aspiring to have a society that treats all fairly. It is extremely difficult to convine a Rev. Wright, that things have progressed to the degree that they have. Once some people have their beliefs solidified, they can be almost impossible to change. For example, I have a friend who is convinced that white people will not vote for Obama. This despite the fact that Obama won Iowa, Wisconsin, and a number of other states with a large majority of white voters. Some people just will not change thier minds even when faced with strong evidence to the contrary of what they believe.

I did see the Larry King Live show, two days in a row, and I have to admit, I was not impressed. It's perfectly legitimate to express your opinion and to try to guide the dialogue back onto something that really matters. The only thing is, you've got to do it with class! Practically screaming on national TV and taking cheap shots at your "opponents" cheapens the whole thing. I don't think Obama is helped by supporters who behave this way. I've NEVER seen him act that way on TV himself, under any circumstances. He is always classy, calm, cool and collected. If you must speak up and go on these shows, please, have some class.

How Could Obama Stay in That Church for 20 Years?
Body:
The same way many pro-choice Catholic women stay in their places of worship FOR YEARS
even though the Catholic church is anti-birth control anti-abortion.
People don't agree on choice people don't agree on many of Rev. Wright's statements.
We can all agree to disagree and move on. Not everybody interprets or preaches the gospel
in the same way. Not everybody throws the baby out with the bathwater why should they
be required too?
Thanks Jan Robinson-Flint for providing a very cogent answer.

Responding to Kev I agree with almost everything that you said, however in the case of Rev Wright I believe there is a lot of underlying stuff. I believe that Rev Wright has been personally seeking validation of who he is and to some point may even still be trying to define himself. With all of the worldwide attention being given to Obama he probably felt that at long last he would finally be validated. He would share the spotlight with Obama as his pastor and mentor. Then here comes the sound bites and there goes his dream of validation.
Let's get real when it comes to Faith we can't find agreement on what Jesus said not alone what any pastor or priest might say. If people who attended church left every time their pastor or priest said something they did not agree with our churches would be empty. Leading a congregation as well as preaching and teaching the word of God is not a popularity contest. The media is milking this for their own gain with sweeps coming up this kind of negativity boosts ratings.
I believe there is a lot of deep stuff going on inside of Rev Wright on various levels. His performance Monday at the Press Club did nothing but make himself look bad and raise uneeded doubts about Obama from people already looking for an excuse to not support him. Because most intelligent and fair minded individuals realize that Obama really is the only logical choice of the three remaining candidates all things being considered.

Dear Flavia, my name is Gloria Martinez. I'm disabled and I watch the political shows to pass the time. I saw you a couple of times and I like the way you speak. I decided to let you know a few things that rattle around in my brain. So here goes:
Flavia, there is nothing that scares me more than to think of either John McCain or Hillary Clinton becoming President. John scares me simply because he would be another Bush. Now Hillary (or as I like to call her - Mrs.Ready-on-day-one) shows that she lacks good judgement. She should have thought through the ramifications of giving Bush her vote to go to war, but she didn't. We were not in the state of emergency, she had plenty of time to read the materiels concerning Iraq before giving her vote. How is she going to react in a real 3 a.m emergency?
Then, were Michigan and Florida's votes are concerned, after all the ones running agreed to not count the votes from these two states she herself put her signature on the agreement as well. Now that she is behind she is fighting for the votes to be counted. She stands there saying "Everyone has a right to have their votes counted". I didn't vote in the primary because Barak Obama or John Edwards were not on the ballot. And, Flavi, there are many others like myself and my daughter that did not vote just because of that.
Mrs.Ready-on-day-one said that she is strong because she has had a hard life. Who is she trying to kid? Is she referring to the fact that she stayed with her husband through all of his love affairs, disrespecting the oval office with the silliness of it all? Is that what she calls a "hard life"? Has she ever had to make her food budget stretch? Did she ever skip dinner to make sure that her child had something to eat? Did she every pray that her daughter's coat would fit her again next year so that she could save a little bit of money for emergencies? Please tell me how hard her life has been so that we women, who are single mothers, even some who are married mothers, we who have endured some or all of the things that I listed here can see or understand her plight.
I detest the way Clinton makes fun of Obama because he gives us hope for a better future. Barak Obama tells us the truth. He doesn't try to use slight of hand tactics to make us concentrate on the wrong things instead of what is the truth. She says that SHE will change Washington, like she is some kind Wonder Woman. As though she is action and not talk, like a pachuca.
Now she is trying to tell us that she will get us the gas tax. She doesn't tell us that it really only amounts to $30.00, oh, and the many people would be laid off, and that our roads will not be fixed. Why can't the slogan-theiving Senator tell the truth?
I wish I could hear more of your commentaries. Keep up the good work!
