Debating without baiting

Here's a Daily News op-ed worth checking out today.

I have always felt that it is not just what you say, but how you say it that is important. I agree that it would be great for Presidential candidates to read these "10 ways to poison a debate," as civil discourse is greatly needed.

One of the main reasons I have supported Obama's campaign is because I respect the way he has run his campaign. I do think that all of us could stand to read this piece as well. We may not be taking part in debates on TV and conversations that impact the world, but we debate with our family, spouses, friends, neighbors, and colleagues daily. It is important to remind ourselves how important it is to seek to understand before being understood.

Young lady, you are incredibly naive. You also seem to be somewhat of a 'millenial' as well, for you seem to consider yourself an expert in many matters. I suspect that is because the bookers for many of the news shows find you strikingly similar in appearance to Dee Dee Myers, though not nearly as mannish. Please remember that, no matter what success you seem to have in your quest for fame and fortune, your opinions mean far less than the average Joe on the street.

Dave--if her opinions don't matter why are you on her site and watch her on tv? Speak for yourself I like to hear and read them. Also, that is the whole pt. of this site and why folks comment and guest blog. Get a life.

Amen Julie. Plus isn't pointing out someone else's article showcasing their opinion?

#1 on the list was almost 100% accurate.

The problem is that many of the political discussions of our day are light on facts or ideas and heavy on dramatic innuendo shaken with subsurface tongue in cheek insults.
Makes for a good tv cocktail of 3 second sound bites fit for the "reality tv" audience, but doesn't provide much substance.

"Fluff" is what it is.

We deserve more from our political aspirants.

I am still not sure about Obama. Yes, he has done his utmost to avoid a dirty war and avoid the dirty things thrown at him.

Is that enough to sway my vote, I like Hilary and I can't truly explain it yet. I hope Obama's nobleness can carry him through out the election.

Bottom line, is he willing to do what ever it takes to win the Office, even if it may take blood?

You are either naive or as much of a "typical politician" as Barack Obama is. His entire campaign is based on the image that David Axelrod created, as is his HOPE and CHANGE message. Obama is a puppet with his own agenda, and it's frightening to think that people such as yourself either can't see it or won't admit it!

Axelrod did not work for Obama when he was in Indiana and his image and reputation were the same. How do you explain that?

Terrific show. Flavia. You really tried to get it back to the issues and nailed your talking points. I agree, no need for more debates. We are exhausted from them. You are right. Wright should show humility instead of this egotistical showboating, but let's get beyond this guy Wright. And you really got under the skin of the sanctimonious Lanny Davis. You would not be stopped. Bravo. You are courageous.

I do believe that Obama has to make a very very strong statement to distance himself from this shipwrecker. Whatever he may have done for his congregation, he is ruining in one fell swoop the greatest prize and leap forward anyone in the black community could make. It's astoundingly self-destructive. I think, Carole Simpson had it right. Wright is trying to get back at Obama for his Philadelphia speech. Personal vendetta. Wright wouldn't be a covert Sicilian by any chance, would he?

(Oh, and you looked terrific. I didn't even notice, did you wear a blazer or not? Your face drew all the attention.)
