I agree with this thoughtful piece. In my capacity as Chief of Staff to the Lieutenant Governor I worked closely with the board of Pardons and I too noted a tremendous need for the measures that Mary lays out. Her frightening numbers and anecdotal evidence lend further credence to the thesis I lay out in "An eye for an eye and the whole world is blind."
In the case of the Vatican, it appears that their strong words on forgiveness and redemption, and the importance of outlawing the death penalty and treating our prisoners fairly, are more than just words.
Those traits forgiveness and redemption separate us from the rest of creation yet they are traits that we as beings made in God's image forget to display.
When raising a child I will tell him or her that the best example of human strength and spirit is to forgive. It is the hardest thing to do and the best way to walk with God. They are traits we need now more than ever from each other and our leaders.
