It takes time and energy away from things I believe to be more important to Pennsylvanians. Things like property tax reform, raising the minimum wage, education and health care.
Flavia - glad you are back from the West Coast!
Posted by: sb at April 18, 2006 11:18 AMDon't stay too long back east! LA needs your political sanity. Too many lefty lunatic fringers out here making Hollywood a national laughingstock
Posted by: Bo at April 18, 2006 02:21 PMPennsylvania should be lucky that this issue is only presenting itself through legislation. In states like Michigan, Maryland and other referendum states, the radical right has used and are preparing to use this issue as a way to drive a wedge between political candidates and drive out their conservative base.
The process for having an issue appear on the ballot as an initiatve measure takes longer than some of these other states so the conservatives are trying to do it the old fasion way. Trust me, you will see this issue raised in the fall elections as the right-wing tracks how certain members voted.
Could we please not let Pennsylvania end up like Kansas and their Fred Phelps homophobes?

Posted by: steve at April 18, 2006 04:42 PMAren't constitutions supposed to ensure our rights, not take them away? When we are faced with inadequate health insurance for our citizens, unqualified teachers for our children, inadequate drug abuse treatment, and major environmental problems, I'm just happy our legislature is working hard on a gay marriage amendment. If these guys (and gals) were on Gilligan's Island, they would be more interested in hut assignments than fixing the hole in the boat.

We at the Friends of Rose Izzo campaign are in need of financial support. The Primary Election is just around the corner. Rose Izzo and the Incumbent have the only Republican Primary in Delaware County. The Incumbent has very deep pockets, but with a little help we can win. We are focused. With your help we will have a fighting chance. All we need is a few generous donors.
Therefore, please join us in support of Rose Izzo to become your State Senator.
We urgently need your help. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $5000 before the Primary Election. If 50 people donate $100 each, we can meet that goal.
Please help today. Together, we can win and make a difference.
Just go to www.RoseIzzo.com and click on the Donate page.

Many issues will come before the Senate. Be confident that Rose Izzo will do the right thing for you, your family and Pennsylvania. Let us not forget that Rose Izzo`s opponent voted himself an exorbitant pay raise behind closed doors, late at night while our taxes continue to accelerate and our public schools still remain under-funded.
As State Senator, Rose Izzo will work hard to represent all the people of Pennsylvania.
Rose Izzo, A leader you can Trust
Thank you,
Desperate voters, fearful that homosexuals might enjoy the sanctity of marriage knowingly elect an incompetant President.
EXORCISE YOUR RIGHT, VOTE !!
Posted by: cognitorex at April 20, 2006 03:06 AMHopefully, this shameful exercise will backfire like "intelligent design" did last year. At some point, the voters will wake up and realize that these hot-button social issues are distracting us from solving more critical problems with the economy, health care and education. And like Dover, PA, maybe they will replace their elected officials who choose divisiveness over the common good.
Posted by: Mark V. at April 20, 2006 11:46 AMThank you Flavia for bringing attention to this! There's more info about this sneaky Trojan-horse amendment at www.center4civilrights.org.
(This is what happened in other states. The amendment people claim "It's just about marriage" and then afterwards we'd hear "Oops, did we take other legal protections away too? Oh well!")
