Three and a half million people hungry. Two and a half million displaced due to violence. Four hundred thousand people dead. The war in Iraq? No, this story, sadly, has not made headlines until recently – the deteriorating situation in Darfur.
Thankfully, many Citizen Hunters in this country, and around the world, have taken the lead in raising awareness of the need for action in the troubled Sudanese region. The culmination of their organizing came this week, when thousands rallied in Washington, DC to draw attention to the cause.
Among those who took notice was President Bush, whose White House team smartly met with advocates. Said the President, “The genocide in Sudan is unacceptable ... There will be rallies across our country to send a message to the Sudanese Government that the genocide must stop ... I want the Sudanese Government to understand the United States of America is serious about solving the problem."
The current diplomatic situation finds the international community at a deadlock on what to do about the senseless killings, beatings, and rapes in Darfur.
The world is waiting for someone to break the deadlock. Tens of thousands of activists succeeded in forcing the White House to pay greater public attention to the situation. Hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of citizen hunters can force the administration to take decisive action, and work all the diplomatic channels to save Darfur.
All Citizen Hunters should help make an end to genocide in Sudan a reality.
Thanks for the links to direct our energies.
It saddens me that when we visit the DNC or the RNC web sites,
there isn't much of a dialogue about important issues.
The communication is generally "National Enquirer-esque" tripe.
Thanks for Citizen Hunter, Miss Flavia.
Posted by: jimbolio at May 3, 2006 06:19 AMI understand the situation over Darfur, but I don't get the inaction taken by these "world leaders". There is absolutely nothing being done. It's almost as if everyone is saying the boat is sinking but no one offers to bail the water. WTF?

Posted by: Philly at May 3, 2006 10:13 AMSo now the Flavia wants to send American troops into an oil-rich, predominantly Muslim country, with suspected ties to al-Qaida and WMDs, that’s experiencing genocide?
How very chicken-hawkish of her.
