Curves Workout – How Effective is it?

According to a research study conducted earlier this year by the ACE (American Council on Exercise) the popular “Curves” workout has limitations.

The study concluded that Curves 30 minute workout burns approximately 184 calories which is less than the calories in 2 slices of dry toast - 200 calories. It qualifies as a moderate-intensity program for someone not very active.

Additionally, researches were concerned about the hydraulic resistance machines, which are not adjustable. They also found that many of the participants were doing more chitchatting than working out.

Ultimately, you’ll need to increase the variety and intensity of your workouts to continue progressing. Read the full ACE study here

    Sabrina:

Interesting...one of my clients joined Curves a year ago and she loves it. She feels comfortable exercising in an environment with just women. She has lost weight because she's been consistent with her workouts, which was not the case when she trained at different location with me. Whatever keeps people moving is fine by me!

i don't know what your position is on women's right to choose, but we do know what the owner of Curves' is.
he is virulently anti-choice and donates lots of money to anti-choice extremists and is also big on supporting very dubious abstinence only education.
so there's another reason not to go to Curves.

Wendy, Thanks for the info. I have no idea who owns Curves but if his social agenda is to keep women in the dark ages, then none of us should support Curves. I'll spread the word!

I think Curves is a wonderful place to workout. In response to "Wendy & Sabrina" What is wrong with abstinence? If women respected themselves more they might not have to make a choice that they might regret for the rest of their lives! Aren't you both glad that your mothers chose life! I suppose being in the dark ages is a choice also. I happen to love being home with my child! Get this, I also love taking care of my husband!

What the hell does abortion have to do with working out? Kepp your agendas to yourselves.

Please note that whatever drives people to make changes in their lives is very personal. Curves is not going to work for everyone nor are the diet pills like ALLI - it is a matter of choice - I feel CURVES has given me the flexibility that I was missing due to lack of exercise at work. I faithfully go 5 days a week and am very energized after completion of the circuit - thank you out there in no man's land - I live in Concord, Ca and I go to the facility in Pleasant Hill on Morello where I find Ginger (very suppotive) for all of us - chit chat can occue but one needs to stay focused to the opportunity Curves presents.

I have been attending Curves for almost two years and I have to say that if you are focused and actually go there to get a good work out, you can get great results. Curves helped me to lose almost 40 pounds already. As for the owner being pro-life, that is awesome and may God bless him for standing up for his morals in a world that despises that!!! That just gives me one more reason to love it and support it! Thanks :)

I'm looking at joining Curves as part of a regime to become healthier and to get fit. However, before committing to any particular program, I thought I'd do some checking on the success of the Curves workout program. I find the comments on this site disturbing, and I say this as a pro-choice feminist with socialist leanings. When did we, as a pro-choice movement, becomes so hateful and disrepectful? The key to pro-choice is CHOICE - the choice to choose. I am embarassed by the narrow mindedness of some of you out there.

abstinence doesn't work. I am fine with people being pro-life for religious reasons, I personally am not. but telling teenagers they can't have sex and not informing them about birth control methods is always a bad thing.

    Trina:

If you won't support Curves because the Founder/Owner is pro-life, and pro-abstinence, then don't go. They will still be there whether you go or not. If you don't go to certain places because of what the owners believe or support, you probably won't be eating out, shopping, etc. If you try to track/monitor what every one believes, you'll drive yourself nuts. Get a life. No one cares if you keep your $40 a month.

    ann Lukesh:

I'm so glad to hear that the owner of Curves is a moral man who believes that God created life and we have no right to take it. To say that abstinence doesn't work is strange - because if you practice abstinence you can't have a baby and if you don't their is a great possibility you will. Can't be anymore straight forward than that. On another note - I am going to curves and have lost weight and feel wonderful. Lots of energy and stamina.Would recommend the program to anyone.

    Betty:

My retired mother in law (age 63) has struggled with her weight for 20 years. She joined curves about 2 years ago, 6 months later there was a drastic difference in her size and health. She looks great. She goes 3 days a week, and loves it. I'm eager to go myself, but the one near my home is only open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday thru Friday. They're loosing a lot of business with those hours.

Women "pro-choice" or whatever the hell you name it......they are just sluts trying to justify themselves and their lack of concience and responsability....stupid women is what this world doesnt need, so stay away from curves and the rest of us, and I hope in your other life if there is one, your whore mother decides to rip you into peaces while you are alive inside her.....man! I cant belive it!

Also, I dont practice abstinence, but im aware of the risks I take, and the result of them I will suck it up

The politics of Curves owners are being supported by those who pay to work out there, plain and simple.

btw - If you are anti-choice, you can't credit the pro-choice stance by saying that is "your" choice. Anti-choice is just that: There is no choice.

One more thing: The ignorance in some of these anti-choice posts just makes pro-choice supporters stronger in their convictions.

    Patricia Cornell:

At $36.00/month, my membership in Curves here in St. Louis, MO will not make/brake the owner no matter what his beliefs. Were I investing thousands of $$$ in his company, yes, I would take notice of where my money goes.

I know after three weeks daily Curves, at 71 years, I have lots more energy, I met a chiropractor who is helping me a lot, and I can see me doing this daily even during the pretty cold St. Louis, MO winters....something I did not have last winter.

BTW I think abstinence works to prevent pregnancy and STDs and other things too bad to mention here.
Also, if one does not drink alcohol, he will not get drunk....same theory.....easy, easy way of thinking. Patricia in St. Louis, MO

Lol, sex, abstinance, pro-choice, pro-life, owner's opinions will all still be there reguardless of where we decide to workout. More energy into the workout and less energy into negativity I say.
