'Biggest Losers' tell how they became winners

Matt Hoover & Suzy Preston lost a combined 252 pounds
THIS PAST weekend I attended the NBC 10 Fit Fest, where I had the pleasure of chatting with Matt Hoover and Suzy Preston, perhaps the two most famous winners on the popular NBC show, "The Biggest Loser."

Hoover, a former wrestler (now a motivational speaker) from Iowa, and Preston, a hairstylist from Seattle, built better bodies and a romance, too. They're engaged and plan to marry some time next year.

The couple, both 29, dropped a whopping 252 pounds on the show. Hoover won the $250,000 purse, and Preston won $25,000.

What follows are their words of wisdom for the Daily News Flab to Fab Fitness Challenge participants - and for the rest of us.

They gave me the 411 on the accelerated way they lost weight, the reality of how many people gain weight back, and how they have adjusted their lifestyles to keep the weight off!

    Q. What's it like being a celebrity?

Matt: I don't consider myself a celebrity. I just feel like I was lucky to get on the show. I consider celebrities movie stars or TV stars.

Suzy: I don't feel like I am. I have to take my trash to the Dumpster just like everyone else.

    Q. When are you and Suzy getting married?

Matt: We're not quite sure yet. We're keeping it a bit of a secret. It will be on some island somewhere.

    Q. How much did you weigh when you began the show?

    Matt: 339 pounds.

    Suzy: 227 pounds.

    Q. Wow, and how much did you lose?

Matt: 157 pounds. I went down to 182 pounds.

Suzy: 95 pounds. Down to 132 pounds.

    Q. No way, and you lost that in three months?

Matt: No, nine. We were on the ranch for three months, then we had to come off and do the rest at home. It's not as radical as it looks. It's a nine-month process.

    Q. What about now? Were you able to maintain that loss?

Matt: Right now my weight's at 239 and I want to get down to 215.

Suzy: Right now my weight's at 150, and I'd like to live at 140.

    Q. So, Matt, you had a rebound gain of 57 pounds, and now you want to trim off 24 pounds to land at a solid 215. And Suzy rebounded about 18 pounds.

Matt: Yeah, I put on weight, but I'm not back to 359. The show was a game, and I did it to win.

    Q. What was your exercise routine like during the show and what is it now?

Suzy: Losing the weight is easy, and the show created the best environment. During the show we exercised four to six hours a day, plus a low-calorie diet. Keeping it off, now that's hard. The show's over and now it's about everyday choices.

I get up at 4:30, and I'm at the gym when it opens at 5 a.m. I work out five to six days a week for one to two hours a day. I do an hour of cardio five days a week, swim, and train with a trainer two days a week for an hour to 90 minutes.

    Q. Great! That's what it's all about. Making it your lifestyle. Any closing words of inspiration for your Philly fans?

Matt: Don't start until you really want to do it. Don't waste your time. When you make that commitment to yourself, don't quit. Stick with it. Don't quit on yourself. Stick with it!

If you haven't moved off the couch in three years, you're not going to go out and do a marathon. Be realistic about your expectations. Start with walking down the block and back, and slowly progress until you're a little uncomfortable.

That's the way it has to be. That's the way it is for me. I have to set goals for myself. I constantly evaluate and establish new goals.

Suzy: Just do it! Make the choice and do it.

    Model search

Are you an ordinary woman doing extraordinary things? This is just the model search you been waiting for.

Faremon, a lifestyle and exercise clothing brand produced by Tosca Reno and Oxygen magazine, are searching for "real" women to appear in a magazine ad modeling Faremon clothes.

They want real people - not supermodels or fitness stars - to share their stories of success, inspiration, achievement - and/or attempts at inspiring others to lead fitter, healthier lifestyles.

The selection criteria are based on your story, not your looks or age. Send your essay and photographs to Chip Jasper at fjaber
