5 ways to lose 10 pounds for a stress-free summer

AREN'T YOU glad it's summer? I know I am. Summer is my favorite time of the year.

But for people who feel self-conscious about summer clothing and bathing suits, summer means more stress. Are you among them? If you're still trying to lose that last 10 pounds - or the first 10 - follow my five sure-fire, tried, tested and true suggestions.

    1. Weigh in daily.

Despite of what you may have heard, the scale is not the enemy; however, your denial is. Make yourself accountable every day by weighing in first thing in the morning.

You'd be surprised how much you can gain in just a weekend of overindulgence. If you let it rip Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can easily pack on 2 to 3 pounds.

Don't believe me? Maybe you'll find some recent research by Brown and Duke universities more compelling.

According to their research, 61 percent of people who weighed themselves daily maintained their weight within five pounds, as opposed to only 32 percent who weighed themselves less frequently.

I don't need a fancy research study to figure that out. The scale keeps me accountable and thinking twice before going for seconds.

I prefer to weigh-in first thing in the morning, before breakfast. My scale is a Tanita InnerScan model (www.tanita.com), and I love it.

The InnerScan monitors multiple areas of your well-being, such as: body weight, body fat and body water percentages, daily caloric intake, metabolic age, bone and muscle mass, physique rating and visceral fat rating.

Sure, you don't need all the bells and whistles (my scale cost about $120), but I'm a gadget girl, and I like having the option of using the additional accessories.

    2. Keep a food journal.

Some people think this is a real hassle, but it is as easy as pie to maintain. I prefer The Pocket Food & Exercise Dairy by Alan Borushek (www.calorieking.

com). This handy little companion fits in my smallest purse and keeps me accountable and in control of my nutrition.

In less than five minutes a day, I record my calories, carbs, fat, protein and exercise. This is one of the best investments you'll make for as little as $3.95.

For those who prefer online journals, or software for the computer or PDA, check out programs like www.myfooddiary.

    com ($9 a month), www.diet

power.com software ($59), or Calorie King Nutrition software for your PC ($49) or PDA ($29.95).

Again, don't take my word for it.

The largest documented study of individuals successful at long-term weight loss and maintenance, according to the National Weight Control Registry, found that they exercised daily for an hour, maintained a nutritional diary, used portion control and weighed themselves regularly. (For more information on the registry, go to www.nwcr.ws.)

    3. Exercise daily.

There's just no way around it. Exercise is an essential ingredient to a healthy lifestyle, including weight loss and weight maintenance.

To lose that 10 pounds more quickly, be sure to include a combination of cardiovascular exercise, weight training, flexibility and daily meditation in your routine.

It may sound like a lot, but our bodies are designed for movement, not for the sedentary lifestyle we've grown accustom to.

According to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, we are living in a time of Sedentary Death Syndrome (SeDS) - a growing epidemic of health problems caused by a sedentary lifestyle.

The empirical and anecdotal evidence is clear that regular exercise increases health and longevity, while inactivity decreases health and shortens life-span.

    4. Cook from scratch.

Frankly, it would save you a lot of time, and money, too, if you ate at home and packed your lunch.

Sure, in a pinch there's nothing wrong in picking up a salad (with low-calorie dressing), fruit or cottage cheese at the convenience store.

However, it may surprise you to know that the typical American age 8 and older consumes an average of 4.2 commercially prepared meals a week, according to a Meal Consumption Behavior report by the National Restaurant Association.

Surely you know someone who stops by Dunkin' Donuts for coffee and a breakfast sandwich every morning, picks up a salad at Cosi for lunch, then has dinner with friends at the latest trendy restaurant. And this doesn't include those snack stops at the Wawa.

Not all restaurant meals are unhealthy, but restaurants are notorious for serving huge portions of fat-, salt-, and sugar-laden food. Get back to the basics. Prepare your meals at home and see how quickly you drop 10.

    5. Believe.

Believe there are no limits, except for the ones you put on yourself. You can lose 10 pounds in a jiffy, if you believe in yourself and follow my recommendations. Let me know how you're progressing, and whether you're losing the weight or maintaining your weight loss.

    Hi Kimberly,

I am a 44 year old women who weights about 160 at 5'4. I have gained about 20lbs over the last 3 years and feel terrible. Up until last week I led a sedatary(sp) lifestyle. After seeing myself in pictures recently I decided to do something about my weight. I joined the gym 1 week ago Monday and have lost 3 1/2lbs. I do keep a food diary and have stop eating large portions and mainly eat tuna, chicken, fruits and vegetables. My excercise routine consists of going to the gym everyday to do 20 minutes on the trendmill followed by 30 minutes on the strive weight machines. Even though its been 8 days I have only lost 3 1/2 days what could I be doing wrong? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey T,

Don't give up! It took several years to put the weight on, so it isn't going to drop off overnight. I know this from experience--I lost 27 pounds in six months and have maintained my current weight for 2 years. It can be hard to keep continuing a diet/exercise program over the long haul, but slipping on clothes that haven't fit for a long time is a great reward.
    Good luck!

My son is almost 2 years old, before I was pregnant I was a size 2. Now I am wearing a size 6 due to my thighs and waist. I am very unhappy with the way my body has turned out and my eating habits are not good at all. I really would like to loose about 10 lbs and become somewhat more toner. All advice is very much appreciated.

I came to this site for some tips for losing those last 10 pounds that never came off after having kids. I don't hate the way I look, or consider myself fat, I'm just uncomfortable at this weight. I was concerned though about the posts from the younger ladies. I get the impression some are experiencing serious body issues. I have to suggest to those who are experiencing self hate to take a weekly yoga class. Please! Yoga is not only good for your body, it's good for your attitude about your body. All bodies are different & beautiful. Learning to love yourself is key to your overall happiness.

Man, all you fatties do is whine! Stop throwing fried foods and pastries down your throats! Take a frigging walk! If you like to eat enormous portions then dont yap about your size....its your body-it youre unhappy then make a life style change...dont complain about something so trivial when there are people starving, people with cancer, people without faces!

    It'll be ok...:

I know at 13 or even at 21 being skinny seems to be all you can think about, but being 5'2" and 139 i am a size 4. But at 5'2" and 139 i was a size 10 5 years ago. The only differenc is muscle versus fat. eating right and excerising are the only way the fat is going to come off and stay off and while a crash diet seems to be a quick fix, it will fail and you will get frustrated. Eat 6 small meals a day and workout like you mean it. it will work despite not feeling like it. Until then remember that highschool ends and no one really cares about prom afterwards. It'll be ok...

    This Is To Cheyennne:

Hi there Chey. I too was 13 and 148 pounds. i so greatly wanted to be skinny like you do. I started thinking about anerexia and things like that, but i knew I would only be hurting myself. I talked to my doctor and she recommended a diet plan, but I'm not all that great of a dieter. My cousin and I then looked into becoming Vegiterians. I have been a vegiterian now for about 6 months, and in total I lost around 40 pounds, and I love it. I have boys actually looking at me now, and I feel good about myself. I can actually wear a 2-peice too! I also did and still do 100 crunches daily, and I run/walk around too. I also to push-ups, side-bends, and other things to stay in shape. I still eat meat once in a while [like when at a friends/holidays] so I don't miss out on much =]

I hope this helps, because it did me!

    Sincerely,
    fat to fit

at that age you need to eat regularly and healthily in order to grow, other wise you will feel the consequences in later life i can assure you!

    Jennie:

Hey, I'm jennie and i'm 11 years old, i know that some of you think that it's sad that people under 16 that want to loose weight. But it's not, people of all ages should have a healthy lifestyle and try to have the best body they can. I started working out when i was 10 years old, i was terribly over-weight, i'm ashamed to say but when i was 10 i was 136lbs. and i lost 21pounds of pure fat over summer break and got down to 115lbs at a hight of 5'5. What i did over summer (and you have to stick to this and not give up) is: 1.Watch your portions. Don't eat too much, always try to aim for serving size.
2.Don't snack on any junk-food in-between meals. If you are so hungry in-between meals, don't go for that bag of Cheetos, go for the fruit/vegitable bowl, grab an apple or some carrots.
3.Excersize daily. what i did over my summer break was swim daily for 4-5 hours. Now obviously some people can't fit that into a daily schedual, so what i suggest is to get out and jog 3 times a week (jog at least a mile each time) do cardio-vascular fitness workouts 4 times a week for half hour each time (do things like crunches, sit-ups, jumping jacks, bicycles, push-ups, pull-ups etc.)
4.Never give up. Don't give up in a week because you don't loose the 5 lbs you want to, you have to have a great deal of patience because you can't just expect it to all fall off in a week, loosing weight is time consuming but everyone can fit excersize into their daily schedual.
5.Set a goal. My goal was to loose 20 lbs over summer and, what do you know, i kept working at it and didn't give up on it and stuck to my guns and it all worked out in the end, I finally was thin and happy with my weight.

I wish best of luck to you all out there who are trying to loose weight. If i did it, and if people on The Biggest Looser did it. Hey: so can you.

God this is horrible. Did I really here a girl a 13 year old girl say she wanted to weigh 48lbs? I'm all for people losing weight no matter their age if they need to or even if they want to. But some of you preteens/teens goals are unhealthy. Some of you litererally desire to be underweight. That's not healthy. I want to lose weight too but I know I should never go under 105. I'm 5'2. Some of you taller people are trying to get there as well.
