And you have to give her credit because she's lost 60 pounds since January the hard way: Diet & exercise
IN JANUARY, I wrote a column about Janet Jackson and the 60-plus pounds the singer has said she packed on for a film role.
That column generated quite a bit of controversy, as some readers chided me for what they perceived as criticism of Janet, who has said she pulled out of the film because of recording commitments for her new album.
As I stated then, I'm a big fan of Ms. Jackson. And I applaud her weight loss and dramatic comeback as her 10th disc, "20 Years Old," is set to arrive in late September.
Just take a look at the cover shot of Janet in the September issue of Vibe magazine, and you'll see living proof that, for her, 40 is indeed the new 20.
Ironically, the other day I overheard a conversation in a ladies room about Janet's new, svelte appearance and speculation on how the star got that way in as little as four months.
Lady No. 1 explained, "Oh, she just had some lipo and other cosmetic procedures. If I had her money, I'd do the same."
Lady No. 2 declared, "Yeah, it's easy to lose weight if you have a personal chef and can work out all day long with a trainer."
That's when I chimed in with my two cents, explaining that Janet's dramatic weight loss was primarily the result of a hefty dose of determination, discipline and diet. You see, I've been tracking Janet's progress, as reported in various magazines.
The singer told Us magazine, "I can't say it enough - I hate working out. I have never liked working out, but Tony [Martinez, her trainer of nine years] makes it a lot of fun."
She also said, "I didn't take any fat burners. I've done stuff like that in the past, but I didn't take that route this time... . We don't call it a diet plan. It's a way of life - good portions, nice, balanced meals."
In other words, Janet shed those 60 pounds the old-fashioned way: with a commitment to exercise, healthy eating and portion control. I went on to say that anyone can have a hot Hollywood bod if she is willing to make the necessary lifestyle changes and do the work.
When you stop making excuses, wasting money on the latest quick fix, and jeopardizing your health with so-called magic bullets, then - just like Janet - you can create the body of your dreams.
First, I suggest that you set high standards for yourself. Second, think positively about your health and fitness. Third, and perhaps most important, recognize that anything that anyone else has done you can do, too.
Here are 10 tips guaranteed to help you shed pounds and tone-up like your favorite celebrity.
Vision: Remember, you go where your vision is. If you imagine that you are going to fail at your exercise and diet program, then you will.
Therefore, plant positive seeds in your mind. Image yourself as improving with each workout and eating properly portioned and nutritious meals.
Your mantra: Repeat it daily. "I was born to win! I'm a conqueror. I'm victorious in weight loss, working out and all of life's circumstances. Every day, in every way, I get better and better."
Size matters: I'm convinced that 85 percent of weight-loss success is portion control. If you manage your portions, you will lose weight.
Keep a diary: Maintain a food diary, logging when, what and the amount you eat. You'll be surprised how many empty calories you're taking in. E-mail me for a nutrition log and you can start today.
Budget your calories: Eat six mini-meals throughout the day, which will help keep your blood sugar regulated and prevent overeating. According to published reports, Janet Jackson consumes 1,200 to 1,400 calories daily. E-mail me for a sample 1,500-calorie-a-day diet.

I work out 3-4 tiimes a week... morning cardio on treadmill 20-30 minutes, and some after work aerobic or treadmill workout with some resistance training.. but I can't seem to shed the pounds fast enough.

Also your 5 minute workout, the sample 1500 calorie a day diet and the log. Any advice for a vegetarian?? I don't eat any meat, but do eat eggs occasionally. I've been one since birth and always see lean meat as part of a healthy diet etc.. which does fill you up, but as a vegetarian, I don't get full if I don't have enough carbs in a meal... What do you recommend?

One of my best friends is a Janet fan to the ends she has janet everything. I was very impressed with her healthy life change to loss the pounds. I'm trying to hard down commit and loss the unnessary weigh i've been holding and gaining for the past year or so. This will be helpful.

I recently began walking 30minutes before work and feel so much better. I would love to implement the strength training and cardio exercise you mentioned, as well as, receive the 1500calorie sample diet. I battled Type 2 diabetes since July 2003 and received a positive diagnosis that my levels are normal and it has subdued. I am so grateful and want to do all I can to keep it that way. I do know a healthy lifestyle changes your inner being speaking from my own personal growth.
