Contra dancing is traditional New England social dancing with musicians playing jigs and reels. The dancing is energetic and involves mixing with the other dancers as each couple performs a short routine with another couple before progressing onto the next couple and repeating the sequence. It shares some elements with square dancing such as ''swing your partner'' and ''do-si-do'', but the couples form long lines rather than squares. Contra dancing is easy, mostly involving a smooth walking step. A different routine is taught before each dance by a caller who has everyone ''walk through'' the dance while explaining it. - 10:00 a.m. PRINCETON BATTLEFIELD STATE PARK HIKE: 5 or 10 miles, brisk pace. A loop hike with a drop out point for those who wish to do 5 miles. It includes the Princeton Battlefield State Park, the Institute Woods, and the D&R Canal. The park is located on Mercer Road (Princeton Pike) 3.8 miles north from exit 8B of Route 95. We ride in the areas north, west and east of Harleysville, seldom to the south. This means rolling terrain with some interesting hills and light car traffic. We ride a variety of routes with shorter, easier rides in the spring, and longer, harder rides as everyone gets stronger. This is a very popular and sometimes large group.
