Contra dancing is traditional New England social dancing with musicians playing jigs and reels. The dancing is energetic and involves mixing with the other dancers as each couple performs a short routine with another couple before progressing onto the next couple and repeating the sequence. It shares some elements with square dancing such as ''swing your partner'' and ''do-si-do'', but the couples form long lines rather than squares. Contra dancing is easy, mostly involving a smooth walking step. A different routine is taught before each dance by a caller who has everyone ''walk through'' the dance while explaining it. The ongoing, every Friday night, all year round, Friday night fitness hike; where we try to work up a sweat exploring the sand roads and trails of Brendan Byrne State Forest. Be prepared to walk at an average of 4 MPH, 15 minutes per mile pace with few breaks. Bring water and wear well broken in boots, shoes, or sneakers (sneakers are adequate in dry conditions). Socks are also important foot gear; synthetics and wool being better at preventing blisters (avoid cotton socks).     • 5:00 a.m. EASTERN PA400K BIKE RIDE: Weisel Youth Hostel, 7347 Richlandtown Road, Quakertown, PA. This inaugural edition of the PA400k is based on the "Hawk's Nest" PA300k that heads up to Hawk's Nest along NY Rt 97. Setting out at the usual Quakertown hostel start/finish, we take a quick jaunt over to the Milford Bakery (The iced cinnamon buns are highly recommended). We then turn north, going through Little York, and then up one of our favorite roads, Sweet Hollow Road and down Tunnel Ave. We pass through Asbury enroute to Lommasson's Glen which we will be taking "down" this time after climbing the first of two different Millbrook roads -- both Millbrooks should prove to be memorable challenges. We then head north to Belvidere and on to Blairstown. After the Blairstown controle, we begin the long climb over the Kittatinny Mountains on the second Millbrook road and descend into the Water Gap Recreation area at Millbrook Village. We continue north up to Port Jervis where we pick up scenic Rt 97 that takes us past the Hawk's Nest overlook. We cross the historic Roebling Delaware Aqueduct and then ride along the beautiful Lackawaxen River tow path. We pass through Hawley and then begin our semi-circumnavigation of Lake Wallenpaupak. We turn away from the lake and head back south through the Delaware State Forest and return to the Water Gap Recreation area via the Dingman's Ferry Bridge. We retrace our path back to Millbrook Village and then continue along the Delaware River all the way back to the Water Gap. We cross back into PA on the Rt 80 Delaware River Bridge pedestrian walk. While on the pedestrian walk and for 1 block afterwards, you will be riding on the Appalachian Trail. We continue working our way south along the Delaware River, through Portland, Bangor, and Martin's Creek before the final little grunt up to the College Hill finish. Call 610-559-1145.

    • 9:00 a.m. MS BIKE TO THE BAY TRAINING RIDE: Fit and Fun ride pace. Depart from People's Plaza (at the recycle bins behind the Safeway, Glasgow, DE). Distance will be about 25 miles, over flat terrain at 10-13 mph. Helmet required. Bring full water bottle and air pump. Bike should be in good working order and it helps to know how to change a tire.     • 9:30 a.m. BAKE OVEN KNOB TO LEHIGH GAP: Round Trip Road Miles: 50, Hike Distance: 11 miles. Hike Bake Oven Knob to Lehigh Gap along the Appalachian Trail. Hike 11 miles from Bake Oven Knob to the Lehigh Gap. This is one of the nicer hikes in Pa. There is a wonderful vista at Bake Oven Knob. This is an AT hike and there is some rock scrambling. We will take two side trails during this hike. The first will be a scenic bypass along the top of the ridge for about a mile. Later, we again exit the AT to hike the North Trail which yields wonderful views including the towns of Palmerton, Bowmanstown, and Lehighton. Optional pizza stop after the hike. Meet 8:30 at the Days Inn parking lot, located at the intersection of Rt. 22 and Rt. 309 N, which is 1/4 mile east of the Lehigh Valley interchange of the Northeast extension of the turnpike, or meet at the Lehigh Gap parking lot at 9:30.     • Noon URBAN DARE PHILADELPHIA: Start at Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia. Urban Dare is the team race that’s part photo hunt, part trivia and part dares. Teams of 2 must solve clues to find checkpoints throughout the city. To move on they must take photos or perform dares to earn passport stamps. Each team must determine their own route to the checkpoints. Most teams will cover about 5 to 7 miles and finish in about 3 or 4 hours.
