- 5:00 a.m. EASTERN PA600K BIKE RIDE: Weisel Youth Hostel, 7347 Richlandtown Road, Quakertown, PA. This inaugural edition of the PA600k is composed of two loops that start and return back to the Weisel hostel. The first loop is approximately 375k and is based on the "Hawk's Nest" PA300k that heads up to Hawk's Nest along NY Rt 97. After returning back to the hostel for the sleep-over stop, the second loop is a 225k out-and-back course into the Lancaster area. Setting out at the hostel start/finish, we take a quick jaunt over to the Milford Bakery (The iced cinnamon buns are highly recommended). Vetern riders of the Eastern PA series will recognize our route through Tinicum township as the PA200k in reverse. We then turn north, going through Little York, and then up one of our favorite roads, Sweet Hollow Road and down Tunnel Ave. We pass through Asbury enroute to Lommasson's Glen which we will be taking "down" this time after climbing the first of two different Millbrook roads -- both Millbrooks should prove to be memorable challenges. We then head north to Belvidere and on to Blairstown. After the Blairstown controle, we begin the long climb over the Kittatinny Mountains on the second Millbrook road and descend into the Water Gap Recreation area at Millbrook Village. We continue north up to Port Jervis where we pick up scenic Rt 97 that takes us past the Hawk's Nest overlook. We cross the historic Roebling Delaware Aqueduct and then ride along the beautiful Lackawaxen River tow path. As we near Hawley we turn away from the river and head back south through the Delaware State Forest to the Water Gap. We travel through Cherry Valley, offering spectacular views of the Appalachians, and eventually cross over at Wind Gap. From there, we pass through Easton on our way back to the start/finish hostel for the sleep-over stop. The second loop is an out and back segment through French Creek state park and into the Amish country near Lancaster. Call 610-559-1145.

- 9:30 a.m. GLEN ONOKO FALLS AND PA. GAME LANDS 141 HIKE: 6-7 miles. Joan and I will climb as much as hike the rugged and wild Falls Trail alongside the thundering cascades of the ice cold crystal mist water. The initial climb of 850 feet or so is about as exciting as it gets locally... with sheer drop offs and loose rock. This slowly paced section of the hike is for the confident, sure footed and experienced hiker...the reward....close up views of the three main falls.. a snack from possibly behind or definitely atop the upper falls, plus a grand view of Jim Thorpe and the surrounding countryside below. Then from the top of the falls we will follow an easy and mostly flat gravel trail observing rock formations and Pa hardwood forest to several popular vista points for short breaks and views of whitewater rafters on, and the trains that lumber thru, the Lehigh River Gorge. We should be able to hear screaming rafters and the roar from the rapids hundreds of feet below. Departing the vistas we follow the somewhat rocky trail along the rim and then down the "step" trail to safely and comfortably return to our cars. Allow at least 5 hours total on-trail time. We will meet at the Allentown Rest Area of the PA turnpike (I-476) between 8.50am and 9.15am SHARP where we will caravan the remaining 20 miles or so to the exit and then directly to the lot via wonderful quaint Pa. back roads. Hiking Boots strongly urged. Sticks and gloves also maybe a good idea for any areas requiring 3 points of contact. We have done this hike 5 times now and will get you there as safely as possible but this is a strenuous, difficult hike with a fun and exhilarating payoff. Jersey "Flatlanders" beware..... and excited! Located in Carbon County just outside of Jim Thorpe, Pa. The Batona Hiking Club planned & built the original 30 miles of the Batona Trail, South Jersey's premier hiking trail.
