    • 6:00 p.m. CYCLESPORT BIKE RIDE: 20+/- miles, Class: A. Meet at CycleSport bike shop on 252 & State Road in Media for a road bike ride to the surrounding area. Call the shop anytime for details and to check if the ride is going as planned if the weather is questionable. Distance is according to available daylight during the early days.     • 6:00 p.m. HANDLOFF PARK BIKE RIDE: Leave from Handloff Park, Newark (formerly Barksdale Park at the corner of Casho Mill Rd. & Barksdale Rd.). Each week this ride will follow one of three different routes. Terrain will be flat on the southern route towards Chesapeake City and rolling to hilly on the northern route into Pike Creek & western route into Cecil County. Average speed will range from 15-17 mph on the flat route to 13-15 mph on the rolling to hilly routes. Distance will range from 25-35 miles depending on speed and daylight.     • 7:30 p.m. THURSDAY NIGHT CONTRA DANCE: Glenside Memorial Hall, Waverly Rd. and Keswick Ave., Glenside, PA. Contra dancing is traditional New England social dancing with musicians playing jigs and reels. The dancing is energetic and involves mixing with the other dancers as each couple performs a short routine with another couple before progressing onto the next couple and repeating the sequence. It shares some elements with square dancing such as ''swing your partner'' and ''do-si-do'', but the couples form long lines rather than squares. Contra dancing is easy, mostly involving a smooth walking step. A different routine is taught before each dance by a caller who has everyone ''walk through'' the dance while explaining it.     • 9:00 a.m. BREAKAWAY USA BIKE TOUR OF DELAWARE: Grass Dale Center, Fort Dupont State Park, Delaware City, DE. Breakaway USA presents the Tour of Delaware commemerating Route 9 as a Coastal Heritage Scenic Byway. Riders can choose from either a 40 or 75-mile ride through the largest area of preserved coastal marshland on the East Coast. Route 9 is a two-lane north-south road that runs 52 miles, paralleling the western shore of the Delaware River and Bay. In addition to wetlands, there are approximately 135 farms located in the Route 9 corridor, of which 22,000 acres of land are permanently preserved. Call 484-580-8048.

If you've been riding for a while and feel comfortable with your bike and want to take your riding performance to the next level, join REI expert mountain biking instructors as they teach you to navigate advanced terrain and master singletrack portions of some great local rides. They build on the skills you've learned in Introduction to Mountain Biking with more practice handling obstacles, switchbacks, ascents and fast-paced descents. Learn to ride the areas you've wanted to explore but were afraid to attempt on your own. REI also teaches and enforces proper trail etiquette to make sure trails stay open and safe for well-behaved mountain bikers and all other trail users. This 30-mile trail can be very pleasant, and sometimes - swampy. We'll find out which this time, but wear sturdy shoes that won't mind a little muck. Bring lunch and plenty of water. Rain cancels.     • 8:30 a.m. 25th ANNUAL SCHUYLKILL CANAL DAY BIKE RIDE: 50 miles, Class C+ (11 mph). Meet at Manhattan Bagels in the Chesterbrook Shopping Center. The ride will take us along some well traveled biking roads in western Montgomery County to the Oaks Reach of the historic Schuylkill Canal. Lunch at St. Michael's picnic/fair in Port Providence; view the annual events and sights at Lock #60 and perhaps watch the opening of the lock. Although we stop to regroup, and no one is dropped, this is not a ride for beginners. Expect some hills. Bring a snack, fluid, money and a lock. A multi club ride. Cue sheets provided. Terrain starts out flat and gets more demanding as we make our way north and around to the park entrance. We will regroup as necessary, no one dropped, cue sheets.
