Mostly flat back country roads through scenic farm land, 20-30 miles at 14 mph average pace, with one rest stop. Bring helmet, water bottles and everything you need to fix a flat.     • 6:00 p.m. HANDLOFF PARK BIKE RIDE: Leave from Handloff Park, Newark (formerly Barksdale Park at the corner of Casho Mill Rd. & Barksdale Rd.). Each week this ride will follow one of three different routes. Terrain will be flat on the southern route towards Chesapeake City and rolling to hilly on the northern route into Pike Creek & western route into Cecil County. Average speed will range from 15-17 mph on the flat route to 13-15 mph on the rolling to hilly routes. Distance will range from 25-35 miles depending on speed and daylight.     • 7:30 p.m. THURSDAY NIGHT CONTRA DANCE: Glenside Memorial Hall, Waverly Rd. and Keswick Ave., Glenside, PA. Contra dancing is traditional New England social dancing with musicians playing jigs and reels. The dancing is energetic and involves mixing with the other dancers as each couple performs a short routine with another couple before progressing onto the next couple and repeating the sequence. It shares some elements with square dancing such as ''swing your partner'' and ''do-si-do'', but the couples form long lines rather than squares. Contra dancing is easy, mostly involving a smooth walking step. A different routine is taught before each dance by a caller who has everyone ''walk through'' the dance while explaining it.     • 6:00 p.m. BEGINNER BIKE RIDES FROM SPRINGER MIDDLE SCHOOL: This ride is intended for beginners/families who would like to get out those bikes and ride in a group. We will ride through the nearby neighborhoods of North Wilmington. The rides will be about 8-10 miles at a slow pace (about 8-10 mph or whatever is comfortable for the group).     • 6:00 p.m. BONSALL PARK BIKE RIDE: These rides are 20-25 miles with an average speed of about 15-17 mph. We will start across from Bonsall Park at Silverside Rd and Greendale Rd. We will ride to the Wawa in Chadds Ford, where we will regroup. On the return we will regroup at the DuPont Country Club tennis courts.     • 7:00 p.m. FRIDAY NITE FITNESS HIKE: 8-10 miles, fast pace. The ongoing, every Friday night, all year round, Friday night fitness hike; where we try to work up a sweat exploring the sand roads and trails of Brendan Byrne State Forest. Be prepared to walk at an average of 4 MPH, 15 minutes per mile pace with few breaks. Bring water and wear well broken in boots, shoes, or sneakers (sneakers are adequate in dry conditions). Socks are also important foot gear; synthetics and wool being better at preventing blisters (avoid cotton socks). We will hike to a great vista over the Lehigh Gorge along the Skyline Trail, experience the rolling terrain via the Pine Hill Trail. Take in Sand Spring lake and picnic area for lunch returning via the sweet but poorly named "Shades of Death" Trail alongside the cool flowing waters of Sand Spring Run. A great 9 to 10 mile loop hike yields about 900 feet of overall elevation gain, plus an elective side trip to view the "Boulder Field". Optional dining a possibility only minutes away. Meet at Hickory Run Rest Area of the PA Turnpike Northbound (I-476) and depart at 9:10 a.m. SHARP to caravan directly to the parking area off PA.     • 9:00 a.m. FAMILY FRIENDLY BIKE RIDE IN NEWARK: Everyone welcome, new and experienced, young and old. This is a great first club ride and an excellent opportunity to ride with your spouse, significant other and/or your kids. Depart Handloff Park (Barksdale Road in Newark) for an 11 mile ride at 8-10 mph along mostly quiet neighborhood roads and the Hall Trail. The terrain is mostly flat with some rolls in the last half of the ride. At about the half-way point, there is an option to stop early and avoid the rolls if you choose. A bike helmet is required. If you've been riding for a while and feel comfortable with your bike and want to take your riding performance to the next level, join REI expert mountain biking instructors as they teach you to navigate advanced terrain and master singletrack portions of some great local rides. They build on the skills you've learned in Introduction to Mountain Biking with more practice handling obstacles, switchbacks, ascents and fast-paced descents. Learn to ride the areas you've wanted to explore but were afraid to attempt on your own. REI also teaches and enforces proper trail etiquette to make sure trails stay open and safe for well-behaved mountain bikers and all other trail users. New Novara mountain bikes provided for those without a bike of their own at no extra cost.     • 9:00 a.m. CANOEING/ KAYAKING SKILLS REFRESHER ON LAKE OSWEGO AND THE OSWEGO RIVER: The weather is warm and so is the water. This is a good time to come out and meet knowledgeable paddlers from the OCSJ who will share information about equipment, safety practices, self-rescue, paddling techniques and efficiencies.     • 9:30 a.m. TOUCAN BIKE RIDE TO CHESAPEAKE CITY: Depart from Summit Village (south of Summit Bridge) for a 30-40 mile, 15 mph ride to Chesapeake City for Canal Days.     • 9:30 a.m. HICKORY RUN STATE PARK HIKE: 9 to 10 miles. Join us in exploring the vast wilderness of this great Pennsylvania Park just off the Northeast Extension of the PA turnpike. We will hike at a moderate pace to a great vista over the Lehigh Gorge along the Skyline Trail, then experience the rolling terrain with some good PA hills via the Pine Hill Trail. We'll take in Sand Spring lake and picnic area for lunch and then return sampling the sweet but poorly named "Shades of Death" Trail alongside the cool flowing waters of Sand Spring Run. We hope to see Rhododendron blooming and if so we'll get to walk thru the "Tunnel of Rodo's" on trail and be completely enveloped by the wild shrubs. You'll think you are in heaven or on your way!! Our return to the cars will be via the Skyline Trail. A great loop hike and we won't see the same section of trail twice. This 4 to 5 hour hike will yield about 900 feet of overall elevation gain for the day and little if any, asphalt (Yea!). An optional side trip to view Hickory Run's "Boulderfield". See this natural landmark only minutes away plus we may actually get to "splash" our cars thru Hickory Run Stream (subject to Park roadway conditions). Exquisite Hiker dining a distinct possibility at "The Powerhouse" Restaurant also only minutes away. Meet at Hickory Run Rest Area Pa Turnpike Northbound (I-476) between 8:50am and 9:10 a.m. SHARP when we will caravan directly to the parking area off Pa. SR 534 about 20 minutes away. Boots recommended, extra water and towel a good idea if the heat/humidity is on. Facilities available in several places along the hike but not at the hike lot. Possible carpool/caravan available from Woodcrest Station of PATCO (e-mail leader for cost sharing and info). About 125 miles one-way from Cherry Hill.
