- 7:30 p.m. THURSDAY NIGHT CONTRA DANCE: Contra dancing is traditional New England social dancing with musicians playing jigs and reels. The dancing is energetic and involves mixing with the other dancers as each couple performs a short routine with another couple before progressing onto the next couple and repeating the sequence. It shares some elements with square dancing such as ''swing your partner'' and ''do-si-do'', but the couples form long lines rather than squares. Contra dancing is easy, mostly involving a smooth walking step. In front of Dunkin Donuts or Red Lion at 9:00 a.m. The Batona Trail (BAck TO NAture) is the premier hiking trail in South Jersey. It passes through typically forested Pine Barrens lands. It provides a sampling of the landscape of the region: slow moving clear, tea colored, meandering streams supporting cedar swamps and bogs; sandy high grounds anchoring tall pitch pines; deserted sand roads to once thriving towns & industries; oak-pine forests, cranberry reservoirs and blueberry farms. All are prominent features encountered along The Batona Trail. This is the first in a series of 5 hikes covering the entire 50 mile trail. - 8:30 a.m. QUARRYVILLE BIKE RIDE: Leave Papermill Park for a 72 hilly ride at 13-14 mph to Quarryville for lunch at the Quarryville Family Restaurant. I have always wanted to lead a ride to this new destination. Quarryville was owned originally by the Pennsylvania Swiss and German settlers of the late 1600s. The land which became Quarryville was the property of a John "Swamp John" Groff. The stone quarry is directly adjacent to the village where many of the workers lived. This village became larger as the work force grew hence the town became Quarryville. Groff is one of the more frequent names in Lancaster County, and many of the locals can trace their ancestors back to "Swamp John" Groff. - 9:00 a.m. VETERAN'S DAY BIKE RIDE: 50+/- miles, Class: C+. Meet at Planet Fitness (Old Acme) parking lot in Aston PA at Pennell/Route 452 & Marionville Roads 1/2 block. We'll ride through Delaware and Chester Counties with a stop somewhere halfway (maybe Paoli). I've got a few good stories to tell along the way about my Dad's adventures during WWII. - 10:00 a.m. ONGS HAT EXPLORER HIKE: 5 to 6 miles. Easy to moderate pace. Bring water & snack. Meet at start of Batona Trail a short distance down the dirt road opposite Café Apany on Magnolia Road (about 1 1/2 miles from the Four Mile Circle) for start of hike. Have lunch at park picnic area (benches and tables, covered pavilion) and return. Meet at Washington Crossing S.P. parking lot off Rt. 29, N.J.
