    • THURSDAY NIGHT CONTRA DANCE: Contra dancing is traditional New England social dancing with musicians playing jigs and reels. The dancing is energetic and involves mixing with the other dancers as each couple performs a short routine with another couple before progressing onto the next couple and repeating the sequence. It shares some elements with square dancing such as ''swing your partner'' and ''do-si-do'', but the couples form long lines rather than squares. Contra dancing is easy, mostly involving a smooth walking step. A different routine is taught before each dance by a caller who has everyone ''walk through'' the dance while explaining it. The music is always live, and has roots that go back to traditional Irish and Scottish folk music. Some bands specialize in an old-time Appalachian sound. Contra dancing is great exercise and great fun, enjoyed by people of all ages and lifestyles including families. It is not necessary to attend with a partner. Dress is casual. The ongoing, every Friday night, all year round, Friday night fitness hike; where we try to work up a sweat exploring the sand roads and trails of Brendan Byrne State Forest. Be prepared to walk at an average of 4 MPH, 15 minutes per mile pace with few breaks. Bring water and wear well broken in boots, shoes, or sneakers (sneakers are adequate in dry conditions). Socks are also important foot gear; synthetics and wool being better at preventing blisters (avoid cotton socks).     • PHILADELPHIA INSURANCE TRIATHLON: SWIM: The 1.5K swim will be a point-to-point course, with athletes entering the water from the dock at the St. Joe's Boathouse on Kelly Drive. Athletes will swim downstream, staying to the left of the island and heading under the second opening at the Columbia Bridge. The swim will conclude with a right hand turn to the swim exit which will be right in the belly of the transition area; BIKE: After exiting the transition area, athletes will start the two loop, 40k bike course through Fairmount Park. Each loop of the bike course includes a portion of the COMMERCE USPRO CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIP and combines the flat & fast Martin Luther King Drive and Kelly Drives with four several short technical climbs and descents, including Lemon Hill; RUN: After exiting the transition area, athletes will head north on the Martin Luther King Drive (towards Falls Bridge) and reach a turnaround roughly one mile from the run start. They will then run south on Martin Luther King Drive back towards transition. When reaching transition (after approx. 2 miles of running), athletes will loop behind transition on the grass before rejoining Martin Luther King Drive. They will then head to the front of the Art Museum, one of the City's most famous landmarks, where they will turnaround and head back on Martin Luther King Drive for a photo finish, a short distance from the transition area.     • Janes Island Kayaking WEEKEND. Kayak, camp and bike this weekend on the Chesapeake Bay at Janes Island State Park. Must confirm participation and trip status with leaders. Janes Island State Park is a Chesapeake Bay Gateway, one of over 100 special places to experience the Chesapeake Bay. We will be kayaking both days on the many sheltered water trails around the Island and Little Annemessex River. We will be camping at Janes Island SP in one of the camping loops. Saturday night will include an optional visit to Christfield for an all you can eat crab fest, blue claw and soft shell.     • 8:30 a.m. BIKE TO BAY MS TRAINING RIDE: Depart from People's Plaza (behind the Safeway by the recycle bins) for a 30 mile (approximate) ride over flat terrain at a Fit and Fun pace. Helmet required and bring a full bottle of water with your bike in good working order. We will be slowly increasing the distance each month to have you fully prepared for the MS ride in the fall.     • 8:30 a.m. BAKE OVER KNOB TO LEHIGH GAP HIKE: Round Trip Road Miles: 50; Hike Distance: 11 miles. Hike Bake Oven Knob to Lehigh Gap along the AT. Exit the AT twice for nice views and some rock climbing. Hike 11 miles from Bake Oven Knob to the Lehigh Gap, one of the nicer hikes in Pa. with a wonderful vista at Bake Oven Knob. This is an AT hike with some rock scrambling. We will take two side trails during the hike. The first will be a scenic bypass along the top of the ridge for about a mile. Later, we again exit the AT to hike the North Trail which yields wonderful views including the towns of Palmerton, Bowmanstown, and Lehighton. Optional pizza stop after the hike. Meet 8:30 at the Days Inn parking lot, located at the intersection of Rt. 22 and Rt. 309 N, 1/4 mile east of the Lehigh Valley interchange of the Northeast extension of the turnpike, or meet at the Lehigh Gap parking lot at 9:30.     • 9:00 a.m. ONE FOR THE KIDS HIKE AT PALMYRA COVE NATURE CENTER: Our second annual hike for the children and grandchildren of New Jersey Outdoor Club Members. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The pace and distance will be tailored to the ages of those attending. On the hike we hope to see some of the wildlife in the Nature Center including the resident deer herd. Note the early start time. Following the hike you can attend Palmyra Cove's Jubilee an event that is great for the kids. It includes the moon bounce, pony rides, face painting, and plenty of good things to eat and drink.
