Well, it seems the only person that has a shot at beating Fattah has entered the race. The race has now become about to city's demarcated machine against the Chaka machine. Historically, the Chaka machine has won out on some key match-ups. With the only candidate that can motivate and unify the demarcated machine in the race, we are going to see fireworks this election. This will be about skill, appeal and making deals. Brady has delivered for twenty years for ward leaders and the like. Would you want to be a ward leader who’s ward did not come in for Brady? I know I wouldn’t. This is going to be good! Let's keep it clean and may the best congressman win!

I look forward to seeing Brady's policy vision for the city, if any.

I don't understand how the claim can be made that Brady is the only one who can beat Fattah. Dwight Evans continues to establish a significant amount of political support throughout the city, significant labor support and is right there in the money game. The Mayor's race goes beyond just what deals are cut by ward leaders. A well run field organization, which from every indication Evans will have, along with a well designed media campaign, can win this race - despite what the insiders may want.

Brady is the only one who can beat Fattah - we finaly have two heavy weights in the race to compare on style and substance, I think Brady will have much broader appeal once he gets going-he's far behind the others especially moneybags Knox.

Party Hack - or just the right guy at the right time? We'll see. There have been many times in history when it took an insider, a party leader to make fundamental change, think Andrew Jackson, Lyndon Johnson or even (it's true)Mikhail Gorbachev. I'm obviously not saying he's any of these people, but still outsiders are rarely able to actually get things done, think Jimmy Carter. Of course, Brady may just be a hack, we'll see.

Besides who can win, how much will it take to win? In a five (or six) person race, will the winner get over 30% of the vote?

If Brady's really "the only candidate who can beat Fattah" (and he isn't -- all of the others have a chance at beating either him or Fattah), I'd probably vote for Fattah, or just not vote at all.
BTW, how many Mummers tickets did Brady give all you people so you'd come out here and talk him up?

Brady is the only candidate out there who can say they will make change and actually deliver. He has the contacts in the city, in Harrisburg, and in D.C. Also, he is a truly self-made man who has not forgotten his beginnings (for real). I hope that the city will unite for the great compromiser, and bring this city back to its former glory!

Brady's alright. I'll probably vote for Evans. Nutter seems full it. Knox seems more full of it. Chaka forget about it.

there were five people in the race last the office was open. street got like 38 percent, weinberg got 36 percent, white got like 20 percent, and evans, and fernandez split the rest. some friends of mine who work in the various campaigns say with knox spending his money, brady bringing his party aparatus and campaign skills, and Nutter bringing his noteriety and record from city hall they are likely to split around 50 percent of the vote, and chaka and evans will split the other 50 percent so the winner, at this point it looks like chaka, will probably be 30 or 35 percent.

Brady is a survivor, which is a grand accomplishment in Philly - but, that's because he is an excellent politician.
In all his years serving Philly, what has he accomplished??? What can we point to?? Oh yeah, he has settled bickering pols sissy-fights within his party and "held it together". Big whoop.
Where's his vision?

"change" and "bob brady" can't be mentioned in the same sentence. This is a guy who has been in charge of one of the most corrupt local democratic parties in the nation...and I'm a democrat!

Brady is a political hack with no real vision for the city. With Fattah nothing changes, it's the Street admin all over again. Knox and Nutter really should leave serious politics to those who know what they're doing.
Dwight Evans has a proven track record accomplishment and has a vision for Philadelphia.

John, what's Dwight Evans' vision for Philadelphia?

Bob Brady really showed us how much of a loser he really is by running for Mayor, and guess what he is going to lose anyway so it really don't matter. He is only going to get about 1% of the black vote. I never understood why so many people followed this big fat corrupted loser like he is really something. The black voters only follow him because some of the black politicians who think he is important by being led by a fat white guy matters.

All I want to know is how Brady is going to position himself as a reformer after helping Campbell and the others into city council without the public's input. To me, that is going to come back to haunt him later. I'm sure he is going to have a strong platform because he is smart enough to know people dont think of him as anything more than a party hack with no ideas. I'm not saying he will come up with the ideas, but he will likely have others give him some to be unveiled Thursday. I dont agree that he and Fattah are in a two person race. All of the choices have at least some shot. I dont see Brady being taken seriously on the crime issue and that is going to be a HUGE issue.

If Brady wins, it's going to be four more years of the politics as usual. How could anyone who actually cares about this city really vote for any candidate besides Nutter or Evans?
Posted by Evan | January 23, 2007 4:40 PM
I say give Dwight Evans or Nutter a chance to lead the city for two reasons 1. They are not corrupt 2.They truely belive in this city like I do. If only we can shake these other hacks bleeding this city dry. lamontthomasforcitycouncil@msn.com

I like both Nutter and Evans. However, I think Nutter wins my vote for mayor over Evans because I get the impression he understands the issues better and has more of a plan to address them. Evans has done well at his job in Harrisburg but, unfortunately, he seems to be wanting to take his appropriations committe job to city hall and and have us spend our way out of all the problems we're in. If you look at his website, the issues section mostly talks about how much money he got for Philly from the state budget (that's great, but doesn't necessarily translate to having what it takes to run a city).

I think if Brady is serious about running for Mayor he should resign as Dem Party Chairman and not use that position to intimidate ward leaders and committee people into supporting his candidacy. If I were a threatened ward leader or committee person, the US Department of Justice would surely get a call.

It's cear Brady is being pushed to run from a south philly pol who's being pushed out of Harrisburg who wants to keep some level of power in Philly politics.

If politicians like Evans, Fattah, Brady have done SO much for Philly in their current elected positions....WHY DON’T THEY STAY PUT????
A point not many people are making I think, why don't they stay as Committee Chairs or members of a new majority? They would probably be much, much more effective in their current roles than by running for mayor.

It is going to go like this, if there are 5 candidates in the pool, Brady will win. If it comes down to Brady and Fatah, Fatah will win. Everyone knows that if a black candidate runs against a white candidate, he will get 95% or more of the black vote by just running. Since the majority of this city is black he wins. has nothing to do with policy. Elections in this city are race driven and that's all.
